small knives for big hands?

I'm looking for a knife for my husband, and I need some advice. Our hands and preferences are different enough that my instincts are being counterproductive.

Here's what I know he wants:
long handle for big hands
no serrations
blade of less than 3.5"
no bright colors

And here's what I suspect he'd like:
speed safe
metal scales/handle
no frame lock
tip lock

Right now the shallot looks pretty good, especially in black damascus if I can snag one. Any other suggestions?

The Shallot is a frame-lock.

However, the Speed Bump 1595ALBLK meets all your listed requirements. And while it's discontinued, they are readily available "new-in-box" on ebay for around $50.

Is the blade length on the 1595ALBLK less than the regular speed bump listed on kershaw's site? It shows 3 5/8, just over the legal limit in my area.

Try the mini-cyclone if you can get your hands on it. may not look like the longest handle but trust me, it fills the hand well. 8.5" from wrist to tip of middle finger guy talking here lol.

maybe the all black ENER-G II? i am not sure on the blade length, but it is a nice slim package that should fit the requirements.

both are liner locks so that is a plus.

Ah, that would be a problem, then. Hmmm. There's the Mini-Cyclone at 3-3/16 inches. It also has black anodized aluminum handles. It is a liner-lock.

Also, the Blur; 3-3/8 inch blade, anodized handles. Again, a liner-lock.

If I might ask, why the "no frame-lock" stipulation?

nope. same size as all the other bumps. where do you live that has a 3.5" limit?

lol. we posted at the same time, with me posting twice riffraff

Mostly cause I don't like them - I find them a lot harder to close than liner locks. But I don't know about him, so I put it in the "guess" column. :)

Off to check out the blur, mini cyclone, and ener-g 2. Thanks for the recommendations!

I'll second Mike on the Avalanche! Well made and finished, the Avalanche is one of my top 5 favorite knives.

+1 on the Blur, especially if you can find one in SG2, I love mine. Also, I find liner locks and frame locks equally easy to close, I wouldn't rule out the Shallot just yet.

Midget.:D 9 1/4" for me. How do you even hold a cup of coffee with those little hands OL?

Thank you all for the advice. I think I'm going to try for the damascus Shallot, if I can catch one before all you collectors buy them up. I like the Blur as backup - doesn't weight any more than the Shallot, has a longer handle, and is only 2/3 the price.

I think your husband will be more than pleased with either of the 2 mentioned.
Let us know what he thinks when you get them in hand.

Oh, welcome to the forums.

Where's everyone's manner's!! ;)

i'd have to say, if he's a dude with huge hands, he probably won't have a problem closing a frame lock, and might appreciate it more than a liner for the security factor. Just a thought.

I agree. I'd pick frame lock over liner lock every time if I have the option. Fewer parts means fewer things to clean. Frame locks are stronger too.

midget?? you have 4 inches on me lol. ya doof :p :D

The RAM might also be a good choice. Aluminum handle slabs, Hawk Lock, and a flipper (not speed safe, but just as good).

I personally have small hands, but there is a lot of extra handle when I grip the knife.

I think the 3 main criteria are:

1. Large handle for big hands
2. Blade of less than 3.5 for legality
3. Speedsafe

I think the Avalanche, Shallot and the Blur fit those specs along with the rest of the "wants".

SPXTrader, I already have a Mini Mojito (which I think is just a Mini Mojo with a name change). I like the way it looks, but it's too small for him. I have trouble with the little safety switches on the flipper, so I stick to my Scallion to avoid teeny fingertip bruises and to cut down on the swearing.

Black Damascus Shallot ordered! I can't wait to see it. :D
