Small Knives

Hi Everybody,

I like small knives. I have boxes full of them that I have acquired over the last 40 years or so. When I was a boy my granfather would always give me a pocket knife for my birthday and whenever I went to visit him. Each one is special in some way to me. He has been gone for years now and I no longer carry the special ones because I could never replace the memories if I lost one.

A few years ago I picked up a Kershaw Chive just to keep in my pocket. I had never seen an assisted opener before and I just thought it was a neat knife and it reminded me of a trout when I looked at the profile of it. It has served me well and I often think I should get another one just like it. Yesterday, I picked up a SOG twitch that I found at the store. I don't know if I like it as much as the Chive, but maybe it will grow on me.

Anyway, I was sitting here on the computer killing some time and one thing led to another and I found this forum. I figured this would be the best place to ask what other small assited opening knives similar in size to the Chive are available? I have lots of knives but I find that I prefer the smaller ones the best. Any Reccomendations on what to look at next. I'd really like to find a Chive with the damascus blade if anyone knows where one might be?

well a few companies you might want to look into for smaller knives of that sort are spyderco and Kershaw. Benchmade is another popular one but i cant think of any actual small knives that are in the same class as the chive. maybe a mini griptilian? personally my top picks for small knives are as follows:

AG Russell 3.0 Titanium lock back
Spyderco Squeak, chicago, cat, manbug, dragonfly
kershaw scallion, leek
Boker nopal
CRKT eros, Ripple

and if your also interested in fixed blades: Boker Gnome and becker BK13 Remora

Also, welcome to bladeforums, enjoy the addiction

Looks like a small Eros might be a nice addition.

Thanks for your help

Thanks Guys, keep the suggestions coming.

I'd really like to find another Chive in the damascus edition, if anyone has any leads?

I have 2 Chives and like them a lot.
The SOG Twitch is nice but not as smooth to open.
I carry my SOG Flash I often and like it better than the Twitch.
Most recent addition is the Spyderco Chicago. Not an assisted opener, but a great little knife.

I personally really like the Kershaw Leek. Very elegant and not overly bulky with a sweet blade that can really take on quite a few tasks that may surprise you. I've only had the Leek for a couple of days but I really like it a lot. You can pick them up quite reasonably on various websites. I got mine, brand new, off of ebay and I ended up buying a Kershaw Chive for my sister as it's smaller and will fit in her hand better. I'm waiting on that one right now so I'm very eager to play with it a bit before I hand it over to her.

If you want a more traditional pocket knife then I suggest (and I'll probably catch some heat for saying this) one of the Chinese made Pride USA Congress knives. I bought one on a fluke for something like $10 and I am really impressed. Feels good in your hand, blades are very sharp and it's got very pleasing aesthetics. Also, at the price range I'm talking about it's almost a no brainer even if you end up not liking it and just throw it in a drawer or something.

I have a Benchmade Aphid I carry when I go somewhere where a big knife would scare people, like a wedding, ect.

It's assisted and small.

SOG Flash I. It's a little bigger than the Chive (about 0.25" longer when closed), but it's also lighter (1.2 oz vs. 1.8 oz). I have and like both, although the Flash sees more pocket time of the two.

Are posts #6 and #8 of the same knife?

I appreciate all the suggestions and information everybody.

I found a Damascus Chive and have it on its way. I'm looking forward to getting it.

Thanks everybody!

One of these days I will pick up a "nice" knife. My other bad addiction is handguns.

This is the Spyderco Chicago..

My new damascus chive arrived today, Yay!

And I picked up a usa made Old Timer LB-1 to add to the collection as well.

I wish I could take nice pictures like some I see here on the forums. Some of the photos look like pro's have taken them.

I have been very enlightened about the craftsmanship of a custom knife... My wife suggested I quit collecting guns.... we shall keep her in the dark about custom knives for now....

Thanks for all the info.
