Small lockback

I am looking for a small high quality lockback that could fit in an Altoids can which serves as my small kit. An suggestions?

For you non Altoid fans out there, the inside dimension on the tin is approx 3.5" from end to end, and you could push the length closer to 3.75" if you went diagonally.

Grant,
Here's kind of an off-the-wall suggestion. Check out the Litewing Lockback located near the very bottom of this page on Chris Carlson's Whitewing Web site:

You'll have to check with Chris on the overall length, but the knife features very slim, lightweight and strong titanium handles, and a blade made out of CPM's incredible 3V steel. I have the Stag Lockback which I'm afraid is too long for your specific purposes, but I can tell you that the fit and finish on these is phenomenal. Good luck.

Buck and Spyderco make several small lockbacks that won't break the bank. I like the Spyderco Dyad Jr (it has two locking blades, one plain and one serrated).

A Spyderco Ladybug is absolutely perfect for this application. It is cheap, small and has a great blade.

I know this is now what you are referring to but I find the leatherman micra to be a handy tool that fits easily into an altoids tin. You get a lot more "tool" and take up about the same space as a small lockback.

I get some pleasure from finding a relentlessly peaceful use for a combative looking knife.

A small Opinel folder (No.6), will fit, but also takes up close to 1/3 of the space. Still it's a great small knife, that locks open, and only costs around $7. I like the Leatherman Micra idea too. If you want a really small blade put in a mini SAK. The smallest SAK that Victorinox makes (the one with the tiny scissors), will fit nicely, but isn't a lockback.

I'm gradually putting together stuff for a kids kit -three actually, and thinking about going with the mini Buck in red. All I want is a small blade that locks (and won't fall apart).

Two of the boys will have swiss army knives, but the more I read here, the more I think they will need either a sheath knife or a medium sized lock blade for belt carry.

Anyhoo, back to topic -MiniBuck

MiniBuck or one of the small Gerber LST's.

Cold Steel Tuff-Lite.

Spydrco pegasus, copilot.

Chris Reeve's Umfaan is the ultimate little lock back. I don't know if it will fit in an Altoids tin or not but it fits in my tin. With a Photon Micro Light II attached to the lanyard it rides in my pocket as a back up until it goes in the survival kit for hikes and canoe trips.

Does the SpyderCard fit in an altoids tin? Does it leave you with enough leftover room? I think a delica would fit, and a copilot would as well. Spyderco should have a variety of small lockbacks that would fit.

I have two of the Cold Steel Tuff-Lites in my tiny kits. Very sharp, good lock, so light you won't even know it's there. Plus you can clip it to a lanyard and wear it around your neck. And since they only cost about $20 you can afford to replace them easily.

I have an UNCLE HENRY/SHRADE lockback folder that would fit and is one solid knife! It's also a little on the heavy side, but built solid and I rely on it for a lot as a small folder.

I finally picked up a mini-buck that fit real well in an Altoids can. I choose it over the ladybug because it was plainedged and easier to sharpen in the field.
I then upgraded to a slightly larger tobacco tin that I saw in a store made by Dunhill and it works great.

Don't diss the spydies merely because of the serrations. Almost any currently produced spyderco blade is available in plain edge. Every spyderco I own is plain edge, and my full intention is to keep it that way.

Benchmade Mel Pardue Gentleman's Knife or SOG Gentleman's Knife (both about 3.25 inches over all). The Mel Pardue is one hand opening. Both have shaving sharp edges out of the box, which I can't say for th Gerber LST or Buck knives.

Stryver this is only the second knife that I own that is not a Spyderco ! I wish they made the ladybug in plain edge.

grantdouglas, They make/made - but plain ladybugs are only sold in Japan. Search in Spydercoforum and you'll find the link. I couldn't order as I can't read japanese...
