what will you be primarily using the knife for probably not snake killing how much money are you wiilling to spend if you help us out with that information we can help you better

im willing to spend about 100 when i said killing snakes i ment it will be sabed an cut into the ground, i will be using it of cutting rope building an occasional fire and what ever else comes across my day sharping isn't a problem

BRKT Gunny is a good option

Check out scrapyard knifes they have a few blade lengths available right now for under $100...sheaths are not included but you can find them on ebay.

They use a good steel they call it SR101 but I read its a 52100 with their special heat treat.

Bark River Knifes are nice but try to find one under $100.

Scrapyard or Swamp Rat! Nothing beats the Swamp Rat Ratmandu. Most comfortable knife you will ever handle.

Kabar bk14, 16 or 10 depending on your needs. My bk14 gets more use than any knife I own.

I think of "small" being about 2" to 3". Then "medium" at 3" to 4.5" Anything longer seems like a large knife to me. But then, I don't kill snakes.

The Rat 4 and 5 that you mentioned are probably made of 1095 steel, which has a reputation for being tough.

You could pick up a Spyderco Mule, sheath and a set of scales from eBay or Halperns. This would allow you to pick from among a number of extremely cool "super steels". (e.g., CruWear, Elmax, K390).

It's not an off-the-shelf solution, but you can get some fantastic steel for a good price.

Only problem is all the fakes on there. Good luck getting an authentic blade.
