This necker is my second project, still using handpowered tools only. Here are the specs:
- XC75 steel (much like 1084 with 0.75%C )
- 4 1/2" oal
- 2" cutting edge
- zebu horn scales + duraluminium pins
This one was planed to be edge quenched with a temper line but I screwed up. The blade is very small and I think that I wasn't precise enough with the torch so the entire blade got over the critical temperature and got quenched. The second mistake I made was the etch. I forgot to cut the acid with water and it must have been too strong since it pitted the blade quite a bit
. Wasn't able to eliminate the pitting completly despite the bunch of sandpaper that I used to repair the disaster. The blade doesn't look that bad now but it could have been much better. Anyway, it cuts very good.
I am quite happy with the scales. This time I used Micromesh to finish them, starting with a 1500 grit then up to 12000 grit. Micromesh is a sort of sandpaper but the grit is in the material and not on the surface, it lasts forever and is very flexible. I like it a lot.
