Small or large pins for camel bone

I noticed that most bone handle have lots small diameter pins.
It it just a coincidence or lots of small pins better than two or three larger pins for bone.
I have a expensive camel bone scale that I don't want to screw.
Please advise.

The size of the pins probably is more to the look wanted rather than handle material. With bone and antler be very careful when you peen the pins. One too many taps, or one too heavy, will result in heavy cursing and new slabs. I have used 3/16" on both and no problem.

I have found that camel bone and giraffe splits very easily..especially down obvious cracks or very noticable dark lines.

I plan to use hidden bolts. So no peening.
