I am looking for suggestions on a small pocket knife. Blade about 2.5 inches, plain edge, thumb hole of thumb flip. I don’t want to spend more that $30. I currently have a Spyderco and like it except it is really difficult to sharpen. It has Aus-8 steel. I’m not sure if that is why it is hard to sharpen. Any info on knives for 30 dollar or any info on how to keep an edge on my Spyderco will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Perhaps you could tell us how you're sharpening, and then we could offer suggestions?

I've never found a steel easier to sharpen than Spyderco's AUS-8.

As for a knife suggestion... look at a Spyderco Michael Walker, probably on EBay.

How to keep your Spyderco sharp? A Spyderco Tri-angle Sharpmaker.

It makes it easy to keep a hair-popping sharp edge. Particularly with AUS-8 Steel.

And as an added bonus the Sharpmaker 204 comes with a video that shows exactly how to use the "sharpening system" to sharpen pretty much anything, including knives. My hairless arms can testify to the fact that the video can teach anyone to sharpen knives with minimal blood loss.

I have Cold Steel knives in AUS8 and they take a wicked edge. I don't know how long you've been sharpening, nor what method you're using (scraping against the curb?) but I can say that it takes practice to get a knife real sharp repeatedly. Getting who really knows how to do it can he a big help.

Is your knife a plain edge or does it have a serrated blade?

The Spyderco 204 and it's video would be a great place to start.

Aubeer,

I would wholeheartedly agree with the advice above.

You already have a GREAT KNIFE (Sypderco), with a good steel. You could get a 'decent knife' for $30. Or if your lucky another Spyderco probably slightly used for $30.

BUT-if you can't sharpen what you have now, you will stay in the perpetual mode of dull\buy, dull\buy, dull\buy...ad nauseaum!

STOP THE INSANITY NOW MY FRIEND!!! LEARN TO SHARPEN...:)

This is what you do:

Go to a reputable dealer linked from the Makers\Mfgs forum (I happen to like the treatment I am getting from www.newgraham.com). Do a search for Sypderco Sharpmaker #204. This is a great method as mentioned above. And as also mentioned it comes with a video that teaches you how to sharpen a knife properly.

BUY THIS SHARPENING SYSTEM-GO AHEAD DO IT NOW!!! PICK UP THAT PHONE!

:)

Ok, it will run you more than $30 with shipping. But I have seen this kit sell for as low as $39.95+S&H online (just ordered it myself in fact).

INSERT OLD ADAGE HERE:

Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you have fed him for a lifetime!

Aubeer, the satisfaction and confidence you will gain from this experience is worth far more than the money you will spend on a good sharpening system like the Syperco Sharpmaker!

Good luck, and good edge my friend.

Look for some CRKT ( Columbia River Knife and Tool) stuff. I love their KISS stuff, but if minimalism isnt for you, see what else they got. NW

Check out knives like the CRKT Urban Shark, Point Guard and Pikes Peak. They all come with blades pretty close to the length you are looking for.

Even though the blades are shorter than you asked for, you may also want to look at the Syderco Meercat and Dragonfly since they have the hole for opening.

I bought a CRKT S-2 (ATS34 Titanium grips, frame-lock, pocket clip) that has a 2.5" blade (partly serrated) at a local gun show for $40 (or maybe it was $30--I bought several different knives!).

Its a great light little knife !

I made a nice little leather lanyard since it has a lanyard hole, and this actually aids in opening it one-handed--not that you really need it, but it does help since the knive is small (about 3.25" closed).

And definitely get a Sharpmaker 204... I've watched the video and getting togther some knives to sharpen... you can even sharpen your nail clippers !

Southsummit.com has CRKT S-2 med and large(I think) for 24 dollars. This is the best deal in the world. I kid you not. The knife used to be $100-74 if you were lucky (if you do a search I know you can still find it for over $100). I got a small on close out from eknifeworks (all out). Titanium handle, ats34 blade, easy to sharpen. Perfect little knife (except for the clip). Run don't walk. Congrats, josh

chive it's just to cool plus they look way more
expensive than there price ! sorry syderco
