Small, pocketable fixed blades: A new thing?

I was thinking today about how I really like the idea of having a fixed blade knife small enough to pocket. Mine is an Izula, but I've been seeing a lot more of them from other companies lately. Got the thought put into my head, "Well, that might be a neat new take on the pocket knife, one that's got the best of both worlds."

Then I questioned for a moment... Would it really be a new way to carry a knife? I got to thinking about how a lot of people might regard a traditional pattern folder as an "old" knife, but realistically the technology behind it is actually more complicated and sophisticated than a fixed blade. Got me to wondering if people ever carried smaller fixed blades like this before folding knives gained popularity. It's interesting to me to think that maybe people are beginning to adopt a "new" type of knife that's not really all that new.

Also, I really like the pocket-fixed-blades. All the simplicity of a fixed blade, but compact enough to carry like a folder. Kind of redefines the idea of a "pocket knife" in my head since I always thought of them as folders.
