I have a GEC #73 (Northfield) and the bolsters seem to be coming apart. The pin holdong the bosters together appear to sunk in about 1/64" on each side. I know that I should probably send it in but I thought that I might ask if anyone knows if iI could repair it myself.

Thanks,

-Paul

You would be doing GEC and yourself a favor by sending it back. Mark it "attention: Bill Howard"!
It should come back in perfect condition.

Paul,

How much have you used, and how (in general) do you use yours?

Just curious.

You didn't happen to squeeze the bolsters in a vice to perhaps tighten the blade or pull did you. I agree that on a GEC knife you shouldn't be able to see the pin that goes through the bolsters and blade pivot hole but as with all tools, things happen with hard use. Just because the pin is showing doesn't mean the bolsters are coming lose unless you can actually move the bolsters. Did you notice this when you first got the knife?

The knife was a present from my wife and kids on Christmas of 2009. When i got it the fit and finnish was flawless as far as I could tell. I carried it daily for about month and it was given some pretty heavy use (I am a remodeling contractor). Since then I have carried it once in a while but not very often. This week I've been EDCing it and I just noticed the pin in the bolster. I have not tried to fix or modify the knife in any way.

If the knife and blade are tight, I'd carry it just as it is now -- pin showing and all. It is starting to develop it's character.

I recommend sending it back. What you are describing, as I understand it, is the bolster is opening which will cause serious blade play in use. Let them repair it wihile the problem is small.

Ed,

You're absolutely right both blades have a small amount of bladeplay.
