I see a lot of pictures of peoples EDC kits in here that have the small-<4"- pry bars in them. Whats the main and secondary uses for them? They seem a little small to pry a door, window etc. with---KV

I used mine to pry open a grating once after my wife dropped here keys down it. The grating was too small for my fingers, so I levered one side up and voila!
To be honest, that's the only time I've ever used it (I think).
They are mainly for any smallish job where you wouldn't want to use your knife.

Edit: I remembered! I also used it to take off my bicycle tyre when I had a puncture.

I bought one years ago and haven't used it once.
kinda useless if you ask me, but that's just my 0.02$

That and well my wife laughs at me when I empty my pockets, so yea I removed the prybar to take down the bulk ;)

I used mine recently to wedge open the plastic casing on a tv remote to fix a broken contact.

For my Urban GHB i include a CRK&T MAK 1 Razel knife (glorified but great prybar/knife/tool).
Before that i had a small stanley prybar to carry with me.
--I could use it to dig
--if i need to go around or escape from a bad situation I could break into an abandond building/warehouse to hide out or go around (i also carry a Gerber Wirecutters and a SOG Fusion Tomahawk to get me most anywhere i need to go).
--the bar provides a good solid steel for striking sparks for fire-making.
--use it as a weight to throw a line over a branch to hang food in bear country.
--use it with a rock to start a split in a small log for firewood
--pound it into a tree to hang lantern or other gear on to keep off the ground.
-- use as a splint for broken "--put body part here--"
--fix it to the end of a roughed out handle and you have a makeshift tomahawk.

i could maybe think of more, but now my head hurts. LOL :D

So are you happy to see her, or is there a crowbar in your pocket?

I have some I use when re-modeling house to remove trim from around windows and doors I don't want to break so I can repaint it, but i store them in the toolbox with other tools. Pat

I was recently given a tiny pry-bar. I can see it coming in handy for all those jobs I'd be tempted to pry with my SAK screwdriver. Mac

I can't see buying one that is a lot of bucks, which is why when I made and sold about 300 or more here on the forums I tried to keep them cheap but for a few dollars they can at times come in handy if you have one on a key chain.

With that said, I don't carry or use one much myself.

STR, do you have any pictures you can share of the one that you made?

I've got one that STR made but don't carry it everyday. I think that it is well made and if it would keep someone from breaking the tip off of a knife blade, would be a great investment.

Tops has a nice pry bar / punch combo. I keep one in each car, in case of emergencies. While a pry bar might not be something you'd use all the time, having something to punch out a window is something that you'd want to have on-hand in any vehicle. The pry bar could also be used in the event of a collision as well.

I'm a Tops dealer, but I'd have them on hand anyway. Of course, having a good knife on-hand to cut seat belts is a good idea too. I keep both in the center console of each vehicle for emergencies. Small price to pay if something goes wrong.

I use mine all the time for everything from removing staples to odd jobs around the house.

All those times you say to yourself "I really should not be doing this with the tip of my knife"

i have a large p-38 on my keychain that i use "for all those jobs u just dont wanna use ur knife for" it opens cans too.... grins

I have no use for that a small small prybar but have a 8 inch sharpened prybar at work. With a 8 inch length one can get decent leverage. For a rural survival kit I would ditch it, for a urban one I might consider but probably not. A good strong knife can do more....

I have a 5" one I think, that Bushman sent me when I got the pack from him, I have used it a few times.
#1 Car door was frozen shut, put some tape in the tip of the bar and got it open.
#2 At a youth shelter, I had to get a lock of the door to replace, bar worked good
#3 Very handy when putting down wood floor, a big one is better, but it worked.
#4 mundane things, anything you dont want to use a blade for.
