Small scratches on new knives

Is anyone else anal about buying a new and expensive knife from a retailer and later noticing lots of tiny scratches ? I'm talking about non using knives that are kept as display items. Should the retailer be responsible, and possibly take it back, or is it just part of the experience of being a collector. What should we expect for our money.
I'm mostly discussing the polished silver, or satin bolster type scratches, and not blade scratches.

If the knife is going to be a user I don't worry about minor scratches. In a few weeks I will have added lots of my own.

After having paid $385 for a Sebenza, I know I'll be putting scratches on it because I'll be using my knife to cut everything from fish bait to boxes to rope to bubblepacks. If someone is worried about scratching their knife, they should by a Sebenza. It can be sent back to Chris Reeve for refurbishing to look brand new again for just $23.

Hi Keith.
Maybe you misunderstood? The knife is only for display.I realize that may be
kind of fussy, but I have other users that I don't have a problem scratching up.
Thanks for your comment.

If I was buying an expensive display piece I would inspect that knife top to bottom and back again before I put my money down.

In that case, I would get a replacement from the dealer if the knife were scratched or otherwise marred. You're not being too fussy.

For a display item, scratches on an expensive knife are not acceptable. On a user knife, they are quite acceptable as I would be adding to them very shortly. I would take it back and ask for another and I would inspect it very carefully before accepting it. I might even take a magnifying glass along to be double certain. It would also make th epoint that you are either very serious or an obsessive-compulsive. :)

The magnifiying glass suggestion is a good one. Actually, the dealer did offer to take it back. I couldn't part with it even with the flaws. I accept responsibility for my actions.
