I recently purchased these 2 fine knives and this review is not to determine which one is better but rather to see the physical differences between the too.Since these two knives are similar in size i thought it would be cool to compare the two.
The XM-18 is slightly longer overall comeing in at 7 1/8" while the small Seb is 6 13/16".Closed the Xm-18 is also longer being 4 3/16" compared to 3 15/16"to the Sebenza. The blade length is also very similar with the small Sebenza haveing a slight edge(no pun intended)in blade length of 2 7/8" to the Hinderers 2 3/4".These are not specs from the manufacture but from my findings.
In the closed position the Sebenza is 1"wide at its widest point while the Xm-18 is 1 1/2" a 1/4" of this width is due to the flipper of the XM-18 which petrudes from the body slightly. The thickness of these two knives is also very similar but the Hinderer is about 7/16" of an inch thick not including the pant clip.
Comparing the 2 knives ergonomics they are very different. The Sebenza has fairly straight scales while the XM-18's scales are more contoured to fit the hand while being gripped. The Hinderer has a very pronounced finger choil while the flipper acts as a guard while in this position,,,,you can also choke up in front of the flipper and your finger slides very comfortably between the flipper and the end on the blade.
In the hand the Sebenza to me is more versatile than the XM-18.It seems to me that the Hinderer begs to be gripped like you were going to cut a thick object or were going to stab something,,,,that being said the Hinderer is very solid in this grip.On the other hand if i wanted to peel a apple the Sebenzas grip in my opinion is alot more comfortable than the xm-18.
If we look at the thumblugs and ease of deploying the blade in my opinion the Hinderer wins hands down.First off this XM-18 is a flipper so u have the option of either useing the flipper that is not spring assisted or useing the thumblugs. While useing the flipper i also have to flick my wrist in order to deploy the blade. If you decide to use the thumblugs the Hinderer has dual thumblugs which are larger than the small Sebenzas and not as pointy being more comfortable while deploying the blade. The XM-18's thumbblugs are also larger so its easier for your thumb to catch it.
Both knives have jimping but totally different in their design. The XM-18 combines jimping that is on the spline on the blade and also on the scales while the Sebenzas jimping is only on the spline. The Sebs jimping is smaller physically than that of the XM-18's.When u place your thumb on the jimping of both knives my thumb digs into the jimping of the Hinderer better makeing it function better.
Both knives have a pant clip and both seem to function very well.On the XM-18 you do have the option on moving the clip for a point up or point down carry and with the Sebenza it is only point up carry. Both the clips can be removed if not needed and filler tabs installed. Both models also have a lanyard hole with the Sebenza comeing with a lanyard from the factory.
These are just a few physical comparisons i have found between these too knives.I am sure at this point your probaly wondering which one i like best.Well both being very fine knives and both regulars in my edc rotation,,,i do believe the Hinderer XM-18 will get more carrying time than the Sebenza. To me it has a better "COOL knife" factor than the small Sebenza.Thats not takeing anything away from the Sebenza it is a awesome knife i just like a few things better mainly the ease of opening. Both knives in this size carry quite well.
Heres a few more pics of the two,,,sorry about the quality but they were taken from my iphone.
One last note the blade on the Hinderer XM-18 is a regrind so it is not the original Spanto design that it came with.Just thought i would point that out.
