I'm looking for a small portable sharpener to lash to the sheath of my seal pup It needs to be small tough and user friendly (as I am not expereinced in sharpening) I was looking at the lansky crock stick mini sharpener...I know this will only be good for the non serrated portion of the blade...There are also several rod type sharpeners that look good, also a rec. for a system to use at home would be welcome and any tips or links you all could offer in regards to sharpening and maintaing an edge on my seal pup would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

you can get a small diamond pen sharpener at wal-mart in the fishing dept. also at lowes you can get a corona carbide sharpener in the garden dept. either will pack easily, i have tried both, and like them both.

I attach a Lansky dog bone sharpener to some of my sheaths. It is a triangular ceramic sharperner about 4" long. It is comparable to the Spyderco Sharpmaker sticks as far as girth goes. because it is triangular, you can sharper plain edges as well as serrations. The Gatco Triseps sharpener is similar in size to the Lansky and has a few more features.

For home use, I'll recommend the Spyderco Sharpmaker. I have serveral sharpening systems, and the Sharpmaker gets used the most.

I use a small ceramic military sharpener that fits perfectly across the top of the sheath pouch of my BK-7. It is small and I wouldn't want to reprofile an edge with it but it is good for touch ups. I've been looking for one of those credit card sized diamond sharpeners. They seem very compact.

One idea that I haven't tried yet is to glue some fine grit sandpaper on somthing hard, flat, and thin. Customize as you see fit. Mac

I've seen the gerber "pen" shaped sharpeners, and they are very fuctional. With there cylindrical diamond rod it works for not only the plain edge, but the serrated part.

I have to second this suggestion. I bought a pair of these years ago, and they finally wore out at the end of this year's deer season (processed 12 deer). I couldn't find them locally, so a friend in Oregon sent me a new pair. I then read on the package that Gerber had a lifetime warranty on these. I shipped the two worn out ones to Gerber with a nice note, and they sent me back two new ones! I have four now, and even with all the sharpening I do, I expect they will last me the rest of my life.

The diamond abrasive is quite fine, and touchups take only a few strokes. I like 'em!
