I have a need for a stockman, blade length less than three inches.Been looking at Case,Hen&Rooster, boker tree brand.stainless preferred{cant stand patina}Other suggestions welcome, just looking for well made with no blade play. Thanks for any help.

Look at vintage though stainless will be harder to find. Camillus 71n or 76 , Schrade 108OT, or knives Camillus and Schrade made for others.

This is a Schrade 108OT and Craftsman 9473 (basically the same knife). They've been my daily carries the last couple of months. Not stainless but great carbon steel. They're excellent knives and amazingly often can be found inexpensively. I received the Old Timer in trade and the Craftsman for $15.

The Böker medium stockman is a great knife. They have a couple of options in terms of scales. I very much like the yellow bone. These can be had for under $50. Approx clip blade length 2 1/4".

Case small stockman comes in SS as well as CV with several different bone/stag configurations.

Edit: Oh, blade length less than 3 inches, not whole knife. Tons of great options in the Case medium stockman line.

The clips on a Case 6318 or 63032 are under 3" from tip to bolster. The clip on my (new style) Buck 301 and my Queen #9 are also under 3" so I expect other 3 7/8" stockmans might be as well. So you don't really have to go "small" unless you also want something more pocketable. A typical "small" 3¼" stockman's clip blade will be about 2½".

Queen #26 small stockman. 3 and a quarter inches closed. Blades are D2 which is often called semi-stainless and I have been using mine for about 6 months without a sign of fading etch or patina developing (I like patina and so believe me when I say I have not babied it).

Here with a peanut and boker congress for size comparison.

Case, 125 years of Made in the USA tradition; in stainless steel bone, or the classic yellow Delrin CV. Never leave home without one...

Current brands - plenty to pick from by Buck and Case in their 2014 catalogs; in discontinued brands look for Uncle Henry by Schrade USA - they are made from Schrade+ steel - a quality stainless and there are plenty still out there to buy at reasonable prices. OH

Ps Two of my favorite stainless steel, medium stockman knives; a Case 6318 and a Buck 303.

Two vintage Uncle Henry knives in stainless; 897UH & 834UH (all Uncle Henry knives are stainless).

"less than 3-inch blade" in a stockman pretty much equates to a closed length of 4" or less. That is a pretty wide open door.
"stainless" Still pretty wide.
  • Buck 301 or 303 in 420HC steel. Basic knife. Built like a tank.
  • Canal Street 4" stockman in 440C (not sure if they are in current production) Pretty and well made.
  • Queen 4" stockman in D2. Not as stainless as the other alloys, but it works for me.
  • Boker 4" stockman in, I think, 420HC. good looking stockman.
  • Case 4" stockman in Tru-Sharp (420HC)
  • I have no data on the Hen and Rooster.

Hen & Rooster Stockman's range in closed length from 3.25" up to 3.9", with primary blade lenth of less than 3" to just a tad over 3". OP says he got an H&R, which is not surprising considering it's more readily available in the UK then Case, Queen, or Buck. Solingen steel could be anything from 440, AUS-8 like, 1095 like, etc.

Failed to find what I wanted in the UK, ordered from the USA ;)

Canal Street also has a really nice serpentine stockman and can be found on the bay for a reasonable price with lots of different handle materials. Always stainless steel and usually mirror polished.

They have one in a black corn cob bone I have been hunting after for a while now.

A Queen 3 1/2" just showed up at my door today in birds eye maple, sweet little knife
I like picking up different companies' versions of the same size/pattern, and all the small (tiny) stockman's at 2 3/4" are all nice, Case, Schrade/Old Timer, Boker, Hen & Rooster, I like 'em all :D

Small Stockman pattern - the Buck 303 and on the secondary market the Schrade Old Timer 108OT (at least what I can read from the tang stamp) comes in mind...

The differences between the two are:

Uncle Henrys are stainless with Staglon.

Old Timers are carbon with saw cut Delrin.
