Small Traditional Fixed blade?

Hi All,

Thanks to this forum I've been carrying traditional style knives for a few months now, starting with a Case soddy and Jr, then a Whoooole heap of Rough Riders, and few cheap Schrade etc too.

I used to carry more modern and very expensive folders and neckers and still do but am a big fan of the usability of a small slip joint. I'm comfortable whipping one out anywhere, so to speak.

I normaly have a fixed blade too, as a small necker at work/in the city (Krein Cicada/FK Wm1 mostly) or something with a 4-5" blade in a sheath when in the bush.

I was recommended by a knifemaker friend to try the AG Russell Woodswalker to get a feel for a small fixed EDC knife he is going to make me, and see how I'd like the design to be changed compared the Woodswalker.

I got both sheaths but have been using the pouch one after cutting it down a bit and I'm amazed how much I love it:

It fits in my front right jeans or pants pocket completely concealed, in my back pocket, and in the front pocket of the lab coat I wear at work, with the knife handle always exactly in the same place thanks to the big sheath.

The knife itself is good after fixing the bad grind (recurve) and very rough handles, even with those problems it's a bargain at $10. It can get sharp enough to shave my face if I miss a spot but doesn't hold an edge for super long.

OK so I'll get to the point!

Can anyone recommend any other small fixed blades in a "traditional" style that I could try, just for something different and fun?

If it doesn't come with a pouch sheath I'm sure I can make one, or get one made cheaply. I definitely intend to keep using this style sheath, I love it.

Thanks for reading, and for any suggestions.

Yeah, now that looks nice! Thanks for the tip, I see the bone is about $100, stag about $150. They are 7 1/4 where the Ag Russel is only 6". Still I see one in my future :)

Check out some of the offerings on the knifemaker's for sale area on this forum. A lot of them are making smaller fixed blades (under 3.5") for reasonable prices and they are pretty darned nice!

Good point, I'll spend more time lurking there.

Bark River might be able to provide you with a solution. PSK or Pro Scalpel, but they make quite a few small knives in various steels. Their knives tend to be a bit thick though for my taste.

+1 on willgoy's Bark River suggestion.

The only Barkie I have is this Little Creek but I definately want more. I have had this one since around August and I still have not used it yet. A pocket sheath like the one for your A.G. Russell is really the only practical carry option for me but I keep talking myself out of buying one. I have never EDC'd a fixed blade and I'm not sure I would like it. This topic has got me thinking about it again.

Either way, I really like this Little Creek and I think you would like it too. It's a hard knife not to like. The supplied sheath is very nice too, just not a practical carry option for me.

Wow those little Bark Rivers look great. I'll get something from them for sure. Need to find someone to make a leather pocket sheath. Doesn't need to be fancy. Any suggestions? PM if it's against the rules!

Thanks,

Steve

Brusletto sell two small knives
Bader can be used as a necker
Spikkekniven can be on a belt or as a necker

Both of these are kids carving knives, but I have been using them a pocket knives

Sharp shooter has good pocket sheaths. I have been carrying a woodswalker for ten years. It doesn't get much better and they are dirt cheap. buy a few.

Thanks and yep I ordered one of those sheaths ;)

I love the woodswalker and wil probably get a spare or give them as presents. With a bit or cleaning up/smoothing and a sharpen they are very nice to use.

I carry a case little finn, It fits nice in the pocket.

I googled but no luck, got a link/pic/source? Better PM/email if it's a link to a seller! :)

The Woods walker sheath does not float around in the back pocket like the Pocono. I also find the Pocono to be a bit uncomfortable in the front pocket. You can strop your knife on the back of the woods walker sheath, which is a big plus.

Then there's the "been around forever" Buck 102 Woodsman. It has a 4" 420 HC blade and phenolic handle. Very handy size. You can easily carry it (sheath and all) in your pocket or on your belt.
