Small Tramontina Machete

I picked up a 12" Tramontina machete and a nylon sheath last week. Smokey Mountain sells the blade for a mere $5.99-- the seath was an extra $3.99. The blade came dull, but it doesn't take much to sharpen one up with the soft steel. The tip was just plain blunt-- thick and flat. I wonder if they do that as a safety issue. I worked mine over with a belt sander and got a nice convex edge on it and it will cut paper now. The sheath is dead simple and light, but right hand only. The whole works weighs 14.1oz, which I think makes for a very reasonable chopper for hiking.

Add a mora and maybe a folding saw and you could survive just about anywhere -- for under $50. The machete and an SAK Trekker would make a nice pair too.

I have one of those and you will soon grow to love it. I usually take my 12" Tramontina, a Triflex 780 and a Victorinox Hiker with me whenever I go hiking. With those three tools, I feel very prepared. I also recently added a Wetterlings Wildlife Hatchet, but I haven't taken it out yet. I saw you got the black sheath instead of the camo sheath from SMKW. I have used both of them and while the camo sheath is very thin, the black sheath is quite a bit thicker and is padded. They both cost $3.99, but I think the black one is much better. Even though there is not a strap to secure the handles on either one of them, the black sheath seems to hold the machetes more securely.

Related story, Prior to Labor Day Weekend I was the proud owner of five Tramontinas: a 12", a 14" Bolo, two 18" (one wood and one synthetic handled) and a synthetic handled 22". I took them down to my families land where we were dove hunting, because after hunting we were planning on taking down some fence and then clearing the cedar trees and prickly pears that were growing down the fence line. Well, the Tramontina's worked great. So great in fact, that one of my brothers took the 18" synthetic home and the other one took the 22" one home. Of course the beauty of Tramontina's is that I was able to give them away and was still out less than $15.

Thats the idea. I am trying to spread the love around of blades and babes. I got more if anyone is interested.

Yes, babes and blades are always nice to have around.
If its not allowed here, Pirates cove is a great place to visit.
Might start your own thread named that. See ya there!!!!!

I love that Tramontina Bolo sheath, great piece of kit.

I find the 12 inch Tramointina a bit too short for my tastes here but they sell alot of them in Brazil. They fit nice in a pack. I only carry a shorty like that when I climb up into the mountains, they work well for clearing the sparse brush and preparing a flat place to sleep.

I have paired up the Tramontinas with Moras alot and they solve problems way out of proportion to the investment. Mac

Hiking in the mountains is just what I am going to use it for. If I were clearing brush, then a bigger model would be my preference. With a tool like this, I could gather small branches for fire and shelter building. It's about the same weight as a small hatchet, but seems to have more utility to me.

That is one beautiful woman!! Machette?? Oh ya, like it too. Hope to see more in the Pirates Cove.

I have a Machete that was given to me as a gift a long time ago. It was purchased at an antique store and was some what expensive back when it was purchased and now I am trying to get some information on it. I have no knowledge of where it came from how old it is or even what it was used for. It seems to be very old and very sturdy. The handle is wrapped leather and the end of the handle has a head of some sort of bird like a falcon. The blade is very detailed it has writing engraved on one side and what looks like a bird on the other with the wings spread. The words on the one side of the blade read "COMO AMIGO SOY TU AMIGO COMO RIVAL SOY TU PADRE" . If anyone can help me out with any info on this piece I would be very grateful. I was unable to post pics but I can email or leave my email if anyone thinks they can identify this machete. Thanks, Icemanjl90

Bear,
Nice pics! I hadn't seen those in a while (remember seeing them on Forums of Ramanon a while back). Quick question: how do you like that bolo machete in the upper left corner of the group photo? I think I've seen that for sale on Evilbay, and nearly got it instead of my Tram bolo. Is it worth considering? Just wonder how it's done for you. Thanks.

Also, if you don't mind my asking, how much did the Tram bolo sheath from Leatherface set you back?
