Has there ever been consideration of a small umnumzaan, along te lines of the small sebenza?

everyone considers it but Mr. Reeve. hes very hard headed when it comes to newdesigns or changing an already good knife. But i would love to see one.

I own many CR knives including two Umnums and I think they are just perfect the way they are! I actually started my CR collecting with a Mnandi which I sold bc it was too small. Then I got a small Seb. Then I moved onto the large Sebs and Umnums and now I rarely grab any of the smalls! Now i may even sell the small guys!? Merry Xmas!!!

I have a very small hand. The small seb fits just fine, the large is huge for me.

It's one of those ideas that's brought up a lot:

but like threads wishing for the umfaan's return, interest in it does not seem to affect it becoming a reality

If it ever happens, I'm in for one :). Actually I'd like to see the ceramic ball interface in any CRK of smaller size.

i asked him at the plaza cutlery custom knife show 2010 and he said no.

I too asked Chris, but at the Blade Show in Atlanta this past June. NO! was the answer.

I don't think they have the production capabilities, same reasons mentioned in the Sebenza Sprint thread. Small company, back logged with existing models.

For a long time, I have been hoping for a small umnumzaan or medium Sebenza with a 3.25 inch blade. Unfortunately, CRK came out with the TI Lock with this blade length, so I would not expect another knife of this size.

Back a couple of years ago when the Umnumzaan came out, Chris Reeve did an interview where he said he was planning on making a smaller version. Looks like he changed his mind.

He actually did not say he was planning to make a smaller version in the woodsmonkey interview, he said he supposes a smaller version could be next. I can understand why people climbed all over them selves and heard what they wanted to, but as I see it he did not say it was on the cards in any definite way.

IMO a small Umnumzaan is just detracting from what the Umnumzaan is and was supposed to be. I would much rather see a new smaller knife using a similar set up as the Umnumzaan than a smaller version, I just don't see a scaled down Umnumzaan working the same way it did with the Sebenza.
Things like the glass breaker would no doubt have to be canned on a smaller version for practical and safety reasons. The signature handle texturing would also be a sticking point I think. I'm not a fan of it any way, but making the pattern tighter for a smaller knife would look odd and keeping it the same as on the original large knife would look worse (I realise that appearance is rather subjective, but it would still need to be thought about for production). The pivot on the Umnumzaan is special to that knife and would also have to be scaled down for a smaller version as the pivot from the large would obviously not fit. I don't know what the cost or order limit would be for making a new smaller pivot but it's probably enough to be a factor, as well as having the takedown tools made. The opening action would also no doubt get people crying on a smaller knife as the large seems to have been trouble enough for some people. Access to the thumb stud on a smaller knife would be an issue as I see it and would probably have to see the knife changed some what to make it workable. The blade is another thing that might be an issue. The harpoon swedge on a small would be so diminished in size that it would be near useless for the tasks that the large can manage. Keeping the swedge the same size as on the original knife would have to see the blade redesigned to one extent or another. It would be hard to get round these things with out just having a different knife at the end of it all. That brings us back to a new knife design and not a small Umnumzaan. :)

Not true. Exact quote is: "the next step is to make a slightly smaller Umnumzaan." The comment comes at 41:03.

That is not far off what I said, it's also not just what one says but how it's said. We could go over this again and again but CRK has stated that they will not be making one. CRK do have a habbit of not telling their customers anything so I suppose those that want one can live in hope. You can also call them and ask if you don't want to believe what any one else says.

Small Umnumzaan is not going to happen. I have many other designs I would like to do rather than rehash something I have already done.

I guess that puts it to rest once and for all. Thanks for jumping in and letting us know.

I am certainly looking forward to the other designs.

Any chance you'll ever do a larger version of the Mnandi? If so, can I pre-order now?
