Do you guys have any suggestions for a small water bag? One that can be folded up small so that it doesn't take up much space in my kit. Preferably one that can hold at least half a quart. And be durable. I know I am asking for a lot, but I am hoping someone has an idea I haven't thought of yet. Thanks.

take two ziplocks bags one inside the other. They take very little room and you can get them in one gallon size too. If you want to make it more durable. Cut a leg of some pants. When you feel the bag leave it inside the cloth. You can use a water blader too. I always carry atlist two Ziplock bags with me all the time. There is always a use for them. Cuting the leg of some pants sawing one side of it and you would be surprised at how well it works. You would get tired of it and would want a diffrent color before it would get even ready to tear. Another thing is When ever my sisters or someone wants to throw away some jeans skirts i take them and make all kind of stuff out of them. The leftovers are been made into char cloth.

Hi RunningBoar, Thats a great bottle i heard about them but never realy checked them out. I must give both thumbs up for the platypus bottles. Having you say that they never failed on you and seeing the price i must agree everyone should have one or two. what size do you carry 1L or 2L ???
Have you ever ended up falling on one when they are in your pack??? My Q is how tough are they?? As some one that sometimes would climb on a tree or crawl under rocks I dont want to end up with no water on a day long hike.

I use one everyday and in all kinds of conditions and have for a long time, I carry the 1l size more than any other. IMO they are as durable as any water bottle on the market, and much more convenient. This bottle rides in the top of my ruck everyday and has for at least a year and is as good as the day I bought it.

I have access to a great solution here in Brazil for PSK water storage. The problem is that this monstrosity is only sold here as far as I know.

Every gas station in Brazil sells five liter bags shaped like a jerry can to stranded mortorists to take GASOLINE back to their car. Now if the concept of putting five liters of GASOLINE into a heavy gauge plastic bag doesn't scare you, you are really juiced up. Nuff said on that.

These bags make awesome water carriers and roll up about the size of a large Bic lighter. They have a spout and four finger holes at the top. I have them stashed around in my various packs and kits. They cost me about $1.50 here.

The next time I go back to the States (I don't know when) I plan to carry back a few hundred and turn myself into the PSK waterbag king.

I like them so much that whenever I run my course I make each pair of guys maintain one full for the three days we're out. So far I've only had one get a hole poked in it climbing up a slope from a creek a guy snagged it on some cut bamboo. They hold up for three days of rough handling and can be fixed with duct tape in a squirting emergency.

Water station in camp. We hang the bags of raw water and keep the filter handy.

Five liters is enough to live on. Mac

Edited to add: I use the platypus bags as well and they are really tough. I once dropped a 2 liter full into sharp rocks (by accident) and it didn't pop. I like to use an empty as a hammock pillow stuffer or if I'm sleeping on the ground I use a partially filled one as a water liner inside my Ziggy pillow. I like them as reverve water carriers but due to the screw on lid they don't really get flat enough for a PSK.

Thanks Chris i sure am going to order 2 or three sound like a great bag. Would also be great for backpacking.
Pict thanks for rubbing our noses in one more thing we dont get here. Do you know who makes them??? maybe we could order then off the net. I always like to read your posts.

Sasha,

There isn't an American importer insane enough to import five liter gasoline bags. Some of them are even printed "Gasolina Alcool Diesel". I am still looking for a wholesale source and have had no luck at all finding a distrubter. One gas station did sell me 150 unprinted bags that I shipped home for some friends. He got them from his gasoline company and didn't know where else to look. Sorry to rub your nose in it, someday when I am king the PSK world will be a different place. Mac

I'll second the Platypus bags. I have several. I keep a 1L one with a zip bottom in my PSK. The zip on the bottom makes it easy to fill.

If you want something cheap-go to wal mart in the baby section get some Gerber breast milk bags. They fold up to nothing and have a pleated bottom to stand up when full, great closure with no leaks. Also you could use a condom inside a sock for last ditch(make sure you get unlubricated).

What Brand of Ruck is that? Is that the current issue? Looks a lot nicer than what I had to hump all over God's green Earth back in the 80's.

pict, if you ever do come over here with some of those gas bags, please bring a few for me!

Some comments on the Gerber bags from Doug Ritter at: http://www.equipped.org/etsbriefings202.htm
I got a box of 25 at Target shortly after that report came out and have a few of them stashed in various kits, although I haven't used them yet. www.target.com has them for $5.99 and their stores carry them too, according to the site.

There is a company named Justin Case (just-in-case, get it? ) that makes water bags that look much like Mac's gasoline bags. IIRC I read that somewhere here on BFC. If you Google the company, you'll find they mostly make logo branded emergency road kits, like for corporate promo gifts. I didn't find the water bags listed individually in a rather rudimentary search.

BigBCustom,

That is a camelbak maximum gear ruck, some units do get them issued in additon to the regular issue MOLLE or Alice pack.
I am relatively sure this one was issued and then pawned, where I bought it for 35 dollars.:D

Platypus bottles are strong as hell. I can stand on mine and do to check for cap leaks. They won't burst for nothing and you can freeze and boil them. A word to think about though: My first platypus bottle seemed to leak all over and i discovered a small hole by the plastic cap. It was in a junction in a crease, and looked like it might have been caused by the crease folding or crumpling. Whatever it was, I have subjected numerous other platypus bottles abuse have never seen this again. Just make sure you don't have unusualy stressed creases arount the cap weld.

Ever give a thought to MSR dromedary bags? They are more expensive, but I like 'em.
