Small wheel attachments and the KMG1 grinder

I've had several inquiries for a small wheel attachment on the KMG1. I've made several prototypes and given them away to makers for testing but I canceled my small wheel program as soon as I saw one of these little babies. This is the Hardcore small wheel system on a KMG1.

I think that Hardcore has the best small wheel system available and when I heard of the attachment to use hardcore wheels on the Bader and Wilton, I got one as quick as I could. This attachment for the Bader is easily addaptable to the KMG1. I built the first one over the weekend and I'm very pleased with the performance. The small wheels come in sizes from 5/16" up to 2" and easily slide in and out of the fork. Can you think of anything more simple and functional.

Here are a few more pictures of the components:

This little fork attachment can probably be fitted to home builts, and other grinders with ease.

I don't make or sell the fork attachment. They are available from the Hardcore dealers and I got mine from Koval Knives here locally.

Rob, I think its great since you shipped my grinder today with the first adaptor for the new small wheel attachment. Did you autograph it?

As a follow up to a previous thread on the best DC motor quest. I ordered and received a Baldor DC 1&1/2hp variable speed from Trugrit for $495(approx) plus around $25 for shipping. It looks like it will work quite nicely. Trugrit said they have around 20 of these left. I'm sure I could have picked up something cheaper from eBay, but I felt better about getting a new one from an established company I had at least heard of.

Rob,

I have a question for you. I really like your grinder, but was wondering if you could build it to replace the shaft and pully set up with a mount for a motor so the drive pully would mount on the motor and make it direct drive? With a dc motor you could make if variable speed and reversible quite easily and maybe a little more compact.

For those of us with limited space :) and a dc 1 hp motor I think that would be cool.

Thanks

Rob, have u gottena grizzly yet?? can that be used on it???

Shotgunone,,,I have VERY limited space so I mounted my motor UNDER the work suface. It takes up less space this way than if it was directly mounted to the grinder.Like this,

i used my small wheel adapter on the hardcore today. the other great thing about this setup is that the wheels run on 1" bearings so you dont have to worry about running them at higher speeds.

Taz,

Yep! I bought a griz and arrived last week. I needed it for reference and I have some ideas for the improvements that you've been asking for.

Small wheel attachment for the griz?

I can't speak enough about how impressed I am with this Hardcore attachment. I can't imagine that it would take much work to fit one on the griz. I'll look into it when I get a break,...heck I haven't even unpacked mine yet...it's been too HOT to work in the shop lately :(

Rob

Great!!! Glad to see you have a grizz so u can help us out!!! :)

Rob
The grinder looks good with the small wheel on it I am almost ready to get one and I am going to put a small wheel on mine.
You are right it is to blazing hot to do any work,if you had an
airconditioner it may be better but with the grit flying i think you would be doing alot of changing of filters.;)

I just got one last month; smoothest running grinder in the shop. Smoother than my B3 even. At first I had a little hassel with the tracking but duh after reading a little more of the instructions ta-da. Nice grinder, well built & solid. I use mine souly for hollow grinding nothing else. I grind free-hand so the smoother the better.

I like that attachment ALOT!..I NEED one of those. Could you let me know the price for such a thing and also the price for the wheels. Thanks!

Anso,

I got mine at Koval Knives. I'm sure they would be available through any of the HardCore dealers...( Tru Grit?...Hardcore?...I'm not sure of all of them)

Price: the fork arm is $68 and the wheels run $38-44 depending on the size. Looks like 7 wheels sizes from 5/16" to 2" diameter.

Sincerely,
Rob

Rob,

Was it a simple matter of bolting it onto your machine or was there some monkeying around required to get it attached? I've made up my mind that I am definitely buying one of your machines. They look really heavy duty and practical.

Peter,

I had to make an adaptor block for the KMG1 to accept the small wheel attachment. The adaptor block bolts to the top of the tooling arm.
