I am going to get or make a small wheel grinding attachment. For those of you who use a small wheel grinding attachment, if you could only choose 2 small wheels what size would you choose? This is assuming that you already have a 2 inch wheel and you are looking to use the small wheel grinder to finish handles. The sizes I see are: 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 1, 1 1/4, 1 1/2, 1 3/4

Thanks for the help!

1/2 and 3/4 for me and I have the 2". For what its worth the flat platten wheels can kind of work fine to replace a 3" the few times I've needed one that size or close. Its a pretty simple matter to pop the flat platten off for the slack grinder and just use the upper or lower wheel in a pinch for me..

Thats all I need for small wheels really. Other wheels I like are a 6", 8" and 10" and these are all I've ever needed but I assume one day I'll have a 14"

1/2 and 3/4 as well. Just got mine a few weeks ago and the smaller one is great for guards on hunters the 3/4 is better For bowie/fighter guards

I've got 5/8 and 1. Sometimes I wish for 1/2, less often for something between the two I have.

I have the 1 and 1.5" wheels and use them on a regular basis. My next purchase will definitely be the 1/2 and 3/4 though.

I have a 3/4 and a 1 1/2. The 3/4 is more versitile. But, I think I will add a 1/2 and a 1". I am trying to figure out how to make a small one with an inflatable bladder for use with J flex belts. It would be so sweet for handles. I have a bladder mandrel I use in a drill press but, the sanding sleeves go bad way to fast. It works great for those soft curves on the edges though. All the bladders I can find are either to short or to long. I guess I could go with a inch long bladder and use split belts. Jim

What I'd like to see is a 1/2" wheel but a half 1/2". or even an attachment that was longer than the current one so the holding arms held it out there wider for more access on each side of the belt at the wheel for what you are holding. Let me explain. You know when we make frame locks of a thicker slab and we take down the relief to thin the slab to spring the lock? I'd like to have a 1"x72" belt that would fit on a half length 1/2" wheel or see someone come up with some other way to get a 1/2" small wheel to stick out a little further from the holding arms on each side making access so you can get a work piece close but only grind what you want to grind and not the whole thing. Right now the holding arms on each side are in the way and keep you from getting your piece down in close. If it were a bit more access on each side of the belt it would be so I could just use my KMG to make those relief grinds in my frame instead of a drum sander on the drill press or with a thinner profile grinding wheel. I'm having trouble conveying what I'm picturing but I've wished I had something like that on the KMG several times.

3/8" and 3/4" for me.

I know 3/8 ain't on your list, but I seem to use it the most...

TruGrit sells them down to 3/16"

I use it quite a bit too...

What's a small wheel and what's it used for? ;)

Seriously though, I didn't have the knifemaker attachment for my Burr King for something like 3 or 4 years, and I learned to do a lot without one. Now, because of the style of my knives, I VERY rarely use a real small wheel.

But there's always a time and need for stuff, so....

+1 to Brian's knod for a 3/8" It's a really handy little wheel.

I also have 1/2", 3/4", and 1" When I make blade blanks, I use the 1/2" and 1" quite a bit.

For stuff like the guard on this knife, I get somewhere close to the shaping I want on the corner of a big wheel (8 or 10") then FILE them right down to the shape I want, and then use a Jflex belt (roll it) and sneak into the tight spaces.
