Some time last year, I just got tired of messing with those sanding drums on my drill press. I was asked to post a picture of this very inexpensive small wheel setup that I did in my shop so here it is. I used an old 1725 rpm bench grinder, about a three inch length of radiator heater hose, a large washer and the idler from a Kalamazoo grinder for tension.
As far as the idler goes, just about any setup imagineable can be used, it was just convenient since I already had the Kalamazoo mounted to the table. (The Kalamazoo is still operational but it is in "semi-retirement" since I got a "more better" grinder)
I placed the large washer over the shaft next to the bench grinder housing so the belt wouldn't cut into it. I then placed the heater hose over the shaft as a "contact wheel". I then lined up the bench grinder with respect to the idler on the Kalamazoo grinder idler wheel. On these grinders the tension arm is set with an allen screw, it can pivot all the way down to the table if so desired. Tracking is adjusted on the Kalamazoo end.
The really neat thing I like about this set up is that I could have bought the small wheel attachment for my Hard-Core but accessory change out on a grinder is an inconvenience, regardless if its Hard-Core, Bador, Burr-King, Wilton, etc. It is just so much easier to have it set up already, ready for use.
This setup works fast and it works well. I can now use any grit belt AND belt change out is a breeze. This is so simple to do I don't know why I didn't do it sooner.
