Smaller angles on a sharpmaker...

I think it was Don Vito that was speaking of a way to prop the sharpmaker base one way and then the other, checking it w/ a protractor. I have accumulated a ton of exotic steel blades recently and they are coming with smaller factory angles than I can do w/ the SM. Any thoughts or advice you have would be welcomed. Free hand terrifies me, I am contemplating a edgepro. Help me out guys please... Russ:confused:

I just hold the blade a little less than vertical. It's pretty easy to judge.

The angle on each side is 15-degrees. If you bring the spine in 1/3 of the way, you're at 10-degrees, and so on. You really don't need it exact, you're picking an arbitrary angle anyway.

I think the method you're talking about involves using a pencil or a pen under the sharpmaker. I've never tried it. What I'd suggest is using the 30 degree setting for now and just put on a secondary bevel. With the super steels, it shouldn't get too substantial through just touch ups.

Eventually, I'd suggest either an Edgepro or learning to free hand. Honestly, though, even with things like the Edgepro I just end up putting on a really nice, acute edge and then I ultimately use the Sharpmaker to put on a 40 degree secondary bevel for easier touchups. You really probably won't notice a difference between a 20 degree edge and a 20 degree edge with a small secondary 40 degree edge. At least I don't.

I use rubber band. This is my SM @ 24*
