Smaller Blades

Being new to the forum, I see most everyone recommends the 15" or 16", so my question is what are the smaller blades used for.

Generally they are used for smaller tasks ;) . There are some cutting chores for which a large blade is rather cumbersome. An 18" AK is great for chopping wood, but not so great for whittling.

Are you talking about something like a 12 incher, or the small accessory blades?

I sort of figure the 12" is sort of what you would use for small chores like cutting boxes and whittling wood. Small non chopping chores.

I use a 15" AK to open envelopes. :D

Bruise's is keeping it sharp....:p

I'm biased toward a 12.5" Pen Knife, for general camping chores (light duty - fire prep, food prep, etc.)

wLivermore?

The 12 in AK is my favored blade, although if I could only have ONE HI blade, it would be the 15in AK. I have a Pen knife, as well, but the weight-heavier chopping section, and the pointier tip make the 12in AK more desirable for the woods walking and local camping I do. It is not made to cut down trees, but works a charm for general utility. It is so much more than a belt knife.

It also is less conspicuous to those unfamiliar with large blades. After a bit, it is inconsequential on my belt. I can't say the same for the larger blades.

But, unlike Munk and several others, I do not use a blade for harvesting wood for home heating, nor for felling smaller trees on my property. Also, I'm at an age and physical condition where less weight is better.

However, I know I prefer smaller blades than most on the forum, so keep my opinions in perspective.

Whichever you decide upon, you will be pleased.

Do well.

Welcome. You won't find many other forums where a foot-long knife is referred to as "small." It's all relative, you understand.
I agree that a 12" AK or Pen is a good all-around utility knife for camp chores, but I wouldn't want to clean a trout with one. Oh, I guess that's why they put that little bugger in the back of the sheath. Seems they've thought of everything.

I feel that the 10" Bura New Model is my favorite small HI blade. It is just so handy. The handle is a little small, but other than that It is perfect. I have thought about changing the Cho on one of mine to a choil, to help in choknig up on it when doing small, delicate chores. It would be easy to do. It would then transition from handle to blade like the HI Kerambit. What do you guys think? Good idea?
