Smaller EDC?

A friend of mine was asking me about some of my knives and he enjoyed the Leek I whipped out, but he preferred something a bit wider and thicker in hand. I've been looking around at something AFFORDABLE, as that seems to be the most important for him. <$100 is probably a good price range and between 2-3"; nothing over 3".

Kershaw has a couple popular knives, like the Skyline, which I plan to show him when I take him to a knife shop downtown. Mini grip is a tad larger than he wants, but he does like Benchmade's quality so that makes a bit tough...

Anyway, looking for some suggestions and help on the subject. Thanks a ton, Alex

Seems like you might be more interested in more modern folders, which might get you better answers in the general knife forums. Also, are you talking about three inches overall or blade length?

For a more traditional folder with a bit of heft, I'd recommend a barlow pattern of some sort, especially if it's got some stag handles. That'll add some thickness right there.

The Spyderco Sage 1 seems to fit your requirements pretty well: thicker than a Leek, in your price range if you shop around, blade with 3" at the limit, and most importantly: it's a very nicely made knife that feels quite a bit more expensive !

Don't forget the spyderco dragonfly. it's my favorite small folder. I own the g-10 version which is a little more expensive but the FRN handle model is quite reasonably priced.

Uhhh, the Skyline is larger than the Mini Grip.

Mini Grip:
2.91" blade
3.87" closed

Skyline:
3.13" blade
4.25" closed

Victorinox. Sub 3" knife, excellent quality. You can find new patch of Spyderco Meercats well under $100 with sub 3" blades. As you also can find Spyderco Urban's with 2,5" blades under $100

+1 on the Spyderco Sage. It's definitely one of my favorite folders. A real steal within the $85 to $100 price range.

Kershaw Ener-g 2 13/16" blade great knife with a nice flipper.

The old style gray ones are very cheap right now $25-$30 range.

If you can find one the Camillus EDC is Leek sized but with a wider blade. There a 4 different US made models 420hc, 154cm, D2 and Talonite. The is also a imported one with AUS-8. Know for sure what model you are buying. The price range is huge $25 for AUS-8 to $400 or so for Talonite.

AG Russell Folding Spear Point sounds about right. It has a 3" blade, titanium frame lock, the handle shape is enough to fill the hand but is not bulky. Best of all you can buy one for 70 bucks in AG's seconds section. His seconds are for cosmetic reasons, not for any flaw in the blade. I have 3 seconds from AG and have yet to find the cosmetic flaws however.

Thanks! Yeah I thought the Skyline was pretty large :(

To be honest, I kind of wrote off the Sage as too much money, but I never really looked into it that much. The Ener-G2 might be something we'll look at this weekend.

That Russell might be a bit flashy, I live in California so it might be a bad idea to have a spear pointed blade. I have a Makora II and I'm scared of it...

How about a Spyderco Delica? The blade is just a hair under 3" (2 7/8"). Great steel, strong lock, comfortable handles and affordable price. IMHO, it's one of the best light weight EDC knives out there.

The new full flat ground models are lovely, fantastic cutters and they come in a variety of handle colours.

If he wants to spend less, then I suggest a Spyderco Persistence. It's a really great knife for the price. The blade is 2 3/4" long.

I have a leek so I can somewhat understand his request. My answer would be the Sage1 hands down. Dagon knows what he's talking about!

Don’t forget the Benchmade mini barrage and the Aphid. Both are less the $100 at least they were the last time I looked at the oregonkfineshop.com

Buck Mayo Cutback
Kershaw Leek
Benchmade Mini Grip 555

The Leek and the Grip are the same size.

I'd reccomend a Kershaw Junkyard Dog. Basically the same length as the Leek but a little fatter. It's pretty slick looking and has cool (if your into that sort of think) Air Force markings. I think it's one of the most comfortable knives I own and they're made in the USA. You can find them really cheap right now at knifeworks.com.

They are gone for 2010 so get one while you can. Just the small JYD is gone, not the JYD2.
