Smaller-ish folding knife for everyday usage?

Hey folks -

As I mentioned in an earlier post (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=5700424#post5700424), I'm new to knives ... but I'd like to hear your thoughts on a good general purpose folding knife - something to carry around in my pocket for everyday.

Here are some that I'm thinking about:

- SOG Mini Vulcan
- Al Mar Mini S.E.R.E

I like the small size of these; the convenience of the small size would make it much more likely that I would carry it clipped in my pocket every day.

Some questions:
- If you've used these knives, what do you think their relative merits are?
- Are there any comparable small folding knives I should look at?

Thanks in advance!

Those are nice but I like the Benchmade 940. Good size in a compact package! Also Benchmade Mini Ritter Griptilian is another nice small package! The 940 gets my vote. Good luck! Kevin

I haven't owned either of the knives you have listed. By my favorite smaller-ish folder is a BM Mini-Grip. It's an amazing knife and wears well.

The action on the Axis lock for both opening and closing the knife is amazing.

Spyderco Delica
Spyderco Caly3
Benchmade Mini Griptillian

The Spyderco Caly3 is an excellent cutter (in part because of the flat grind) and I really like the blade. The Delica costs less and is perhaps my favorite knife for every day carry. The Benchmade Mini Griptilian is a good alternative.

Case Sodbuster Jr, Peanut, Medium Stockman, Mini Trapper.
All avaliable in CV and yellow.
For those "tactical" bunch- BM Mini-Grip, Kershaw Leek, Scallion, Sapphire.
You could also get a Spyderco something or other, if you like them.

I collect Spyderco, so I am a bit biased. That said, I would look at any of the Spyderco models as a good value. As well, you should do yourself a favor and check out any Benchmade Griptilian.

the best "small-ish" you can always carry knives, any SAK! get a Farmer!

The spydie delica or the BM minigriptillian would both be great knives. If you want something a little nicer and you are a good sharpener then the BM 930 would also be an excelent choice. Even though it is longer than the other knives i carries well because of how thin and narrow it is.

Thanks for all the recommendations, they're great ... but now I see myself spending even MORE time deciding.

Another thing I should mention is that I really like the low-profile clip on the Al Mar Mini SERE. Tried it on a little while ago and really like how it was 99.9% inside my poket with nothing of it showing or protruding to get in the way.

I don't have any experience with the SOG, but the mini-SERE is a great knife and it does ride very low in your pocket or waist band. Mine was an excellent knife; great F&F, as sharp O-O-B as anything I've ever gotten, very tough materials (VG10 & G10). It was a very smooth and solid knife.

I traded it because it was very similar to the BM 525 that I already had and because I prefer a different style of knife for my EDC uses. I favor things like Grips and mini-Grips, Caly 3s, the Sage, or Sebenzas for the usual cutting I need to do. For a larger knife, I'll carry a Para-Military or large Sebbie.

I have EDC'd a SOG Trident for years and started carrying a Spyderco Native in its stead just recently. The Native is a nice little blade in a compact package.

No experience with the Sere or the SOG, but here are some smaller knives that I love:

Benchmade:
Mini Griptilian
14210
960

Spyderco:
Caly 3 (VG-10 or ZDP-189 versions)
Sage
Delica (G-10, Wave or any other variation)
Native 3D (or any other variation, the 3D is my favorite of the Natives)

Kershaw:
Leek (any variation)
