smaller models - too chunky and thick

A lot of the popular.nice knives have a large and smaller model-and sometimes a medium.I notice alot of the smaller sizes seem too chunky or thick in relation to blade size. I was just looking over a CRKT Urban shark in the small size in addition to the BM Afck-800 vs,812 and BM Axis 710 vs.705. It seems a lot of these are great in the full size but too chunky in the smaller size. I realize this is somewhat related to the sandwhich style construction-liners,g-10 scales etc. But I just looked at my Calyspo jr. with micarta handles and that is much, much slimmer then the above models. Is this due sol;ely to the locking mechanisms?
I was curious if anyone else felt this way and personally I would live to have a small(3" blade) knife with an axis/rolling/arc lock that was not clunky and chunky.

I checked out the Benchmade 705 McHenry & Williams with the axis lock, and I thought the width of the blade seems good for a knife that size.

Have you checked out this recent Benchmade/Osborne collaboration. The carbon fiber handle is strong, lightweight and nicely contoured. Also the axis lock mechanism has been scaled to a size that is a better fit with the overall size of the knife (no doubt in reaction to the folks who felt that the full sized axis lock mechanism overpowered the tiny 705).

Thanks for the tip Bronco. i've only seen photos of that model and never handled one and often you cannot get the feel of them by photos alone.

You're right about that. I had the opportunity to play with the 770 at SC Blades Expo 2001 and liked it. Benchmade gets high marks for developing this new version of the axis lock in a smaller size. The proportions match the sub 3" bladed folders much better.

You may also be interested in taking a look at Microtech's UDT. It obviously doesn't have the axis lock, but its plunge lock is very strong and reliable, and the overall design is fairly streamlined and fits in the hand nicely despite its diminutive size.
