Hi everyone I'm very taken by the blade shape of the Tatanka but its a bit too big for my liking.

Does anybody know a smaller model with the same kind of blade profile?

Thank you for your help! :)

I'd suggest the Endura or Delica but they lack the forward finger choil of the Tatanka.
Maybe the Caly 3.5 or the Caly 3 for something a little shorter?

Thanks for the reply!

I think the endura fit the bill nicely. Is there a variant (or any other model) with a swedge by any chance?

Thanks for your help again :)

Doesn't the Tatanka sport a different (new) type of lock? I haven't read may opinions on it.

Always a good thing to hear little about a lock around here seeing as failure is the only topic that gets attention.
I like my Tatanka but if there were a <4" version it would probably garner more interest.
There are other models with a swedge but these are the only ones I own.

Thanks again Barman. Do you mind if I ask you what model your knives are? I think the one on top fit the bill nicely. :)

Those 2 are the Renegade and Blackhawk.
Older discontinued models that you can still find but you'll pay.

That’s not a Delica at the bottom; it is an Endura.
It is just the massive size of the Tatanka makes it look tiny.

Top to bottom, Tatanka, Resilience and Endura.

You know how they call some Spyderco knives “little big knives”. When you first get them they seem tiny, but the way they fit in the hand and how performance exceeds their size. Your perception of their size changes.

Well it is bit like that with the Tatanka. First impression is that is a massive knife, almost to big for practical uses. The Resilience has all steel liners also, but it is a light weight in hand compared to the Tatanka and it feels as big as it looks.

This is one serious folder.

I have average size hands, when I take in a standard grip there is a lot of handle sticking out the back. It feels to be a very solid grip, well balanced, total control. Choking up on the blade, trigger finger in the choil, (Yep I’m a shooter) again total control. I feel confident I could do fine cutting like that.

Getting back on the handle gives you a lot of extra reach with the blade. Good to get a bit swing in those small machete like jobs. Warning! Don’t get tempted to rest your thump in the lock release when you have you hand back there. It may not end well and you may come away with fewer fingers than when you started.

Opening the Tatanka one handed is easy. Closing the Tatanka with hand can be done but should be done with due care. Don’t have your mind somewhere else when you are doing it or you may be picking up fingers from the ground. Two handed closing is easy.

:D Don’t let all this potential lose of fingers put you off the Tatanka. As I said it is serious folder capable of doing serious things and should be treated with respect. If this knife is opened
when there are people are around and they take a step backwards.

If you want a folder to carry when you can’t take your heavy duty fixed blade; then this is the folder for you.

Having said all that; I tend to agree with the opening post.
Half inch off the blade; re-proportion the rest of the knife to that and I think you would really have something.

Tatanka. A bison is not just a large bull. :)

I like the lock, but the warnings are for real. It works like a back lock, but very easy to release, and that heavy blade will swing down in a hurry.

The Tatanka is my favorite knife from Spyderco. The Police is my second favorite. Both are quality knives. I carry a knife as a backup to my gun. No one who ever had to defend their life with a knife ever wished their knife was smaller when it was all over. Big is good.

Hi Barman,

Thanx for the memory trip.

Good explanation Reject.....and you should know. :)

Hey Kaizo,

We do have another power-lock model that is being developed at this time. It is smaller and the blade is a Keating.

Thanks Sal.
We're all looking forward to news on that new Chinook(?).
