Smallest folder not allowed past airport security?

I know that what is allowed past airport security is a different decision at every airport, but I would like to know of times when small knives or blades have not been allowed past security.

Also what reasons were given for the restriction and what rules of thumb did they give you for future use.

Did serrated edges or BT2 make a difference?

Thanks, Bucky

In "Airport knife stories" posted on the Net, London's Gatwick Airport seems to be the champion of zero tolerance of anything remotely sharp. For US domestic flights, the limit is 4", but tales are told of nervous security types frowning upon serrated Spyderco Ladybugs.

The last security type I encountered knew the 4" rule. On the way back from the Blade Show 2000 in Atlanta, my carry-on made a distinct impression on the x-ray machine. After one guy finished wanding me (finding nothing but belt buckle, suspender fastners, and the iron in my blood), the security gal by the x-ray machine, leaning on my carry on, said "Is this yours?"

Yes, I said.

She then poked around in there for what seemed like a very long time, opening boxes and zipper cases to see that everything was under four inches. I think she only opened one or two that might were borderline. Nothing was serrated, and she didn't feel a need to open the Pro-Tech Duke auto that I'd forgotten to put in the box of non-carry-on knives that I sent back to myself by 2-day Federal Express. :

one rule of thumb is NO SERRATIONS....dont know why...but that makes you a psycho in their eyes......

I was wondering if security or leo go crazy over the kitchen knives when you carry them say like in the airport or the mall or in the car hiden in the box. After all most people that get killed by knives get with the kitchen variety. I have even seen a gang banger type person I use the term lightly carrying a cheap kitchen knife in his belt.So what is the deal with sports knives and folders and the like?

Manchester International, May 2000; didn't like the look of my serrated Spyderco Dragonfly. They were very nice about it and, as I was going on holiday, they said they would keep it for me FOC at left luggage. I did mention that my boarding information said nothing over 3" but they've got that covered with an "at our descretion" rule. They mentioned it was a lock knife but said nothing about the serrations, more importantly I think (despite wife and three kids) I failed the personality test, i.e. short cropped hair, black shirt, combat pants (by the way I am not a NAZI Skinhead...) 6', 200 lbs (and I'm not a lonley heart either) and a Scottish accent just about topped it off!

I kind of missed the little fellow but luckily I had an Endura and an Ascent in my checked luggage. Be prepared!

From my experience they would usually get excited about a 3" bladed kitchen knife. I had to check my brief case once because I had a 3" bladed souvenir of Toledo, Spain in it. This was a highly ornamented fixed blade that I had received as a present from my mother in law.

Flew from Jax to Upstate NY few months back....Nothis was said about the Endura II in my pocket or the 5" Pesh-Kab in carry on..I was wondering if the Nealy would get stopped though..Lucky lucky....
