At which length over all does a fixed blade knife reduce from practical to novelty for a general use knife?

About six inches from tip to butt is my ideal size for an edc fixed blade that can be carried comfortably in a pocket sheath. At the moment I have a Landi PSK that fits the bill. For belt carry, a little bigger would be okay.

for me its 3". ( think RAT rc-3 ).

You might as well call the RC-3 a 4" blade, really scale to tip is 3 7/8".

I have a JK Hiker that is that blade length, great size for belt carry. 8 1/8" OAL.

My favorite (and my daily carry) has a 3" scale to tip, and 6 1/2" OAL. Great for pocket or belt.

A comparison shot of those two..

I also have this one..2 3/4" scale to tip 6 " OAL. Great for pocket/belt..BUT the extra 1/2" length of my other knife makes it more user friendly for me.

Great knife, very usefull, but it has been made a back-up knife for a small woods kit.

As a general rule anything under 3" is pretty much useless for me as a fixed blade, since most of my EDC folders are bigger than that. The only exception I've come across so far is the RAT Izula. I have EDC'd that thing for most of this year during the week (switch to the RC3 on the weekends) and it has done everything I could imagine and more. Really handy little blade that goes pretty unnoticed by the local Sheeple, so I can carry it at work without too much crap.

I sometiimes carry a Woodswalker with a 2 1/4" blade and certainly do not consider it a mere novelty. Neither do I consider it a general purpose knife; it's too light for that. It's a specialist tool, and about ideal for a stroll in the woods with a shotgun. For me, such a stroll will yield a few squirrels, probably a rabbit, likely a couple of quail, and, if I am exremely lucky, a grouse. The Woodswalker is about perfect for dressing those.

I think there is something special about a 4" blade and a 4" handle. Large enough to do most chores yet small enough to not be in the way. I am all about balance. 4 X 4, hard to beat.

mgordan, who makes that little guy?I kinda like it!

I did it out of some scraps. The blade was already a similar shape but i wanted it smaller so i ground it down more. Since that picture i sanded the handle down a little thinner.
