Smatchet why 420SSS

ok I am lookig for a smatchet. yet the only ones I frind are the boker ones made with 420 Solingen stainless steel

you know the Boker A-F578 Smatchet ...why could they not have at least used a 440

any knife I ever had in 420 was the suck....

so two question...

1. Anyone know why they used 420

and

2. Anyone know where I can get a nice smatchet that is not a collectable
 
420 tends to be pretty tough. I'd think that would be an asset for something like a smatchet.

I have never heard that about 420 in any aplication are you saying 420 is good for a smatchet????

I have always been told 420 is a cheap steel....I need eduction and information please
 
420 is generally considered a tough steel with poor edge holding capabilities and good corrosion resistance. Most North Americans are edge holding snobs therefore 420 gets a bad rap. Good for some applications, bad for others....
 
take a look at the s&w (i know) smatchet (sw830). same demensions as the boker mini smatchet, 440c steel, $31.95 at the knife center. i've got both edges razor sharp, modified the leather sheath and i like it fine.

want full size.....a mini has no appeal to me....
 
As a North-American Edge Holding Snob, who likes to actually use his knives and doesn't really love to sharpen them every single day, I'd like to submit that Boker used 420 because it's cheap, and allowed them to sell a "special edition" knife for about $100.00 and still turn a pretty good profit.

As far as where you can find it for about $100.00, now that it's a collectible...
 
420 isn't a good steel for knives but it does have its uses because the softness (compared to the more expensive steels) makes it tougher, ie it doesn't have the brittleness associated with harder knives. The downside is it doesn't hold an edge.

Its a good steel for certain applications like CLAK said above. Throwing knives is one area that benefits from this. It would break easier with harder steel.
