The question came up at work about some Smatchets Buck made circa late 80's. I can't remember who they were made for or how many. Joe, can you help?

Thanks -Brian

Brian,
According to my records, we made the model 912 Smatchet in 1989 and 1990. We shipped the bulk of 500 the first year and the balance the following year. They do not have Buck stamped on them. They are stamped:
Combat Smatchet, Wells Creek, Knife and gun works, Scottsburg, Oregon on one side and area stamped with the signatures of Rex Applegatae and W.E. Fairbairn on the other. Its a big'n! I found an ad showing the price at $169 and i have seen them sell for $400.
Hope this helps,

AS most of us do not live in a combat smatchett place, I wonder about the marketing. I would buy a new BUCK.

I`d bet a lot of us would.

If you see one for sale, remember that the late Col. Rex Applegate had some great stuff written about him and he was a bodyguard to F.D.R. Put together some of the publicity stuff and some history on the Smatchett and you've got a real desirable and interesting piece.

Didn't the Buck made ones get discontinued because of fear for employee safety when using power equipment to buff/sharpen them, or was that the reason given for not making any more?

Sam,
The story i have heard is that it was not economical to make the brutes. Each grind was done one at a time. Normal hollowgrinding allows 2 sides to be ground at once but you could not do it on these. Apparantly, the cost went up too high and no other orders were placed.
