For the past couple weeks, Maryland has been in a waiting game with the temperature and the humidity. Waiting for fall. Sometimes summer temps may come back, even in October. When my sister got married, her wedding was in October and got into the 80s, not comfortable when you're in the wedding party wearing a penguin suit.

We've had a couple of nice days over the summer, especially those with very low humidity and cool breezes. This morning was the first day that felt like fall had arrived. Unfortunately, I fell on my knee this morning, screwing up my entire day, but I figure I'll take it easy today, going to the powwow tomorrow, off the Susquehanna, in PA. Nice hiking trails too. I plan on getting out to Turkey Point state park in MD after I go to Gosstoberfest.

I don't know about you guys, summer isn't over yet, but in Maryland, it is a God send when the temps dip, and the humidity heads south. I think of all of the places I didn't get to go to in the spring due to truck issues, and heat creeping in.

Turkey Point at Elk Neck State Park in Northeast, Maryland;
Susquehannock State Park/Muddy Run campground in Holtwood, PA;
Catoctin National Park in Thurmont, MD;
Washington Monument State Park in Boonsboro, MD;
Assateauge Island state park and national seashore in MD and VA (flies leave you a little blood to get home with this time of year);
Fenwick Island state park DE;
Susquehanna state park, MD

Plenty of others. Right now just day hikes. Where are you headed this fall? Camping, hiking, hunting, fishing etc?

I'll second catoctin. I also enjoy codorus. And some of the more local tails. Hopefully I can make it down to the Shenandoah area of Virginia as well.

The weather still isn't quite fall yet, but it has me giddy anyways. I really don't do much outdoors in the summer because it's way too muggy.

Here in East TN we are still seeing the 90+ temps, but the frequency is reducing. Looking forward to the lower daytime temps.

It's still hot here in central Texas. Down to the low 90's from 103ish. But like they say; 'it's a dry heat!'

If you make it to the Catoctin's, don't forget to go back on RT 26 east from Frederick. That way you can stop off at the Lisbon Grill for some BBQ!:)

Our color season will be short this year due to the dry spell. Here in the Catskill Mtns in NY colors are just starting. The last two days were interupted by a bombing of walnuts as the suirrels dropped large numbers of walnuts off a large tree that partially hangs over the roof .That will wake you up !! So animals know it's time to prepare for winter . Bucks have all shed their velvet ,most birds already gone south. Got some wood to stack !.

Nice... I am so ready for it too!

I was on a hike a few weeks back now, and noticed some of the leaves just starting to change color as well. I was hiking from NJ back down to Port Clinton, PA on the AT - so a bit south of you mete. Just before climbing down to Palmerton, by the superfund site, I came upon some deer. Two were bucks, one a "cow horn", and the other a four point. They were both still in full velvet, which kind of surprised me... Good to hear they're shed of it a bit further north now.
Though I will say, the ever decreasing sunlight makes me a little sad...

u.w.

I forget his forum name, but one of the Buck 110 collectors had a beautiful collection at the Mason Dixon knife show, when it was at the Frederick fairgrounds in MD. His collection really made me rethink my aversion to regular 110s. Anyway, he had some pics of Skyline Drive. I need to get there one fall. My buddy at work told me that vehicles do not move. I'd like to be in good shape and take a bike for some spots.

Biking is fine if you are limiting your interest area, but if you are thinking of a larger area for exploring, motorize transportation wins. I don't have any jobs scheduled for today and was originally going to head back to Smoky Mt NP (Cades Cove) where I could bike it and have, but I often make the loop three or four times and motorized transport works best especially this time of the year when the fall foliage folks have not arrived yet. I carry a fairly heavy camera tripod and that doesn't work on a bike. But at Cades Cove, if a bear is sighted, traffic jams up for fairly large distances and you risk not seeing the bruin by the time you slowly work your way with the traffic. The bike works for that real well.

I decided not to make the drive because of a gasoline shortage right now. There was a pipeline break south of Birmingham AL that has caused a lot of gas stations locally to not have any fuel available at all and I don't want to risk the trip and get stranded due to fuel.

I've heard many complaining of the fuel shortage, I hope that the pipeline is fixed this week. Prices have jumped in Maryland and PA, as far as I am aware, but I believe we have fuel coming from NJ and NY. I would have loved to have gone this summer.

My water metal detecting in lakes is coming to an end due to cooler water. Got a bunch of rings though, three gold. Fall is a beautiful and magical time for me, the colours, smells, flying geese, croaking flights of Sand Hill Cranes. When it is windy, I feel a semi excitement and a strange seasonally transitional magic in the air. Spring and fall are my exciting times.

Heading up to the BWCA 10/12 - the 16th for a canoe trip mixed in with fishing and bird hunting. Other then that it'll be the standard woods walking with the dog in the search for Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock as often as possible until the deer gun season. I love this time of year.
