so i was eating a big green apple tonight. used my case amber bone Darrel Ralph Delta 5 kits trapper to cut the allple up whenever i wanted a peice. then i noticed the blade smelled. triedit wil some stainless and nothing. it that the smell of patina that im smellin?

Especialy if the knife is still new, or just forming the patina... after mine with CV got covered with a good "layer" of patina (4 or 5 days cutting every dinner with the knife) the smell went away.

I love the smell of patina in the morning. It's the smell of victory! :D

Seriously, though, it'll go away in awhile. Just keep eatin' apples. I've been on vacation at an inn up in the mountains this week with the wife and kids and toted along my well-patinaed yella cv Case trapper. It's served as our main food-prep knife - no smell issues at all.

im nto worried about the smell i was jsut wondering if that was mother naature at owrk on our favorite tools. pretty cool me thinks ;)

the smell is the metal taking on a patina...if you look at the leading edge of the cut on the apple you might notice a small bit of gray...i figure its good that i get some extra iron into my system...

and i have grown to like the smell...at first it was a little funny but now it seems natural.

and yes it goes away when you have a patina more developed. proof that a patina helps to stop further oxidation...

The smell comes back after sharpening from the freshly sharpened edge till it patinas again.

I was told by a friend who lived in Japan within the Japanese society, that the custom was that a freshly sharpened knife not being allowed to be used for that day.

Personally I don't very much like the smell. Then again its probably one of those acquired scents (like how i love the smell of lighter fluid but others just HATE it).

When I got my sodbuster in CV, the first time I peeled and cut into an apple I almost got knocked back from the smell. When I first used my opinel I don't remember it being that bad. I just ended up committing patina fraud. Just a little as like a break in period and now the rest of the patina forming is all natural without the smell.
