Smileys from other sites

Using smileys and gifs from another site without permission is not OK, no problem there. But the cat that Ewok inserted (in the General forum)appears to be from his own site, hosted somewhere at his own expense. Is there a problem with that?
And the next question would be, how about I upload smileys to my own site? Could I use those in posts here, and could I make them available to others on the forum? (I'd need your OK, and I'd have to check my web host before I could do that. It might not be cool to link up with a commercial site like this.)
Anyway, thanks for your thoughts.

I'd just upload them to BladeForums.com myself, but there's this little issue with image copyrighting and theft of the artists work, and as such I won't do so.

If you upload them to your site, you are essentially stealing the graphics, as they are not public domain. Then you've got your own bandwidth issues to deal with, etc etc etc. Check with your ISP about your using your account for image relaying, I think you'll find that they won't approve it. Not like they'll spot it on their own though....

I'm not interested in stealing artwork or infringing on copyrights. I don't do that. Actually, there are a lot of animated smileys and other graphics available in public domain or freely redistributable, and I can create my own animated gifs anyway. I was really wondering what the BladeForums people thought about linking images, like smileys, from other sites. I've got a maximum on data transfer from my web host, but I'd literally have to transfer a zillion smileys to even approach it.

Hi, Spark.

I wanted to make sure I understood; I didn't mean to help perpetuate it.
A lot of it goes over my head. Insert duh.

Thanks for the great site.

Thanks, David. Good stuff on those sites.

Spark - I got the answer to my question from the thread in the general forum, no sense duplicating it here. Thanks, and good work! (This would be a great place to insert a big ol' spinning smiley, huh?
