I was at my local gun store the other day perusing the cases with no intent to spend money. I just like to stop in a couple times a week when out and about to see if any interesting used guns show up. There were none of the distinctive yellow tags in the case this day however. I was getting ready to leave when I was drawn by an irresistable force to a case in the back corner of the shop. A corner I seldom visit. The revolver corner.

I'm a modern man. I like electronic gizmos. I carry a Sig 229r at work and have the cool tactical light for it. I like auto pistols. No archaic six shot slug throwers for me. I like having 37 total rounds available to smite evil doers...wait...whats that?

There in the back of the case is something I thought I would never see again. It is one of those archaic revolvers. Blued steel. Real blued steel. Not the matte black that we accept as bluing today. Wood grips. Fixed sights. Hmmmmm. Compelled against my will I ask to see it. Feels good. Balances great. Its one of the new run of Model 21s that Smith and Wesson just put out. Not the Thunder Ranch gun with the garish bling bling gold doo dad on the side plate. In fact if it weren't for the hole in the sideplate for the lock it would be very easy to mistake it for one of the classic guns.

But no. Its a fixed sight N frame 44 spl. Not even a 44 mag. A dinosoar. I'd never find decent ammo for it. I don't reload. I have no use for such a thing. With resolution I put it back into the case and leave.

An hour later I'm back. I'm also asking how much I can get for an unfired Sig 239 with night sights in trade. Just out of curiosity of course. Apparently the owner sees the crazed look in my eye and gives me a suprisingly reasonable number. Hmmm

20 minutes later I'm out the door with my new purchase in hand. This gun has something that my whiz bang modern blasters sadly lack. Style. I havn't had a chance to get it to the range yet, but am looking forward to it. Now I fear I have more compulsions. I must buy a classy looking holster and belt. I need to buy reloading equipment to garuntee a steady supply of quality and less expensive 44 spl ammo. I must also find one of the blued model 29 mountain guns they put out a few years ago.

Curse you Smith and Wesson.

Hi Copaup-

Post some pictures if you can...I've searched the Smith & Wesson website to see pictures of this updated model and can't find it anywhere. Sounds like a real beauty. Congratulations!

Hornady and Corbon come to mind for defensive .44spl ammo. Magsafe and Beesafe as well if you buy into those. Very classy gun. My local shop has a 1947 M&P .38spl with a 5 inch tube that I am trying to tell myself I don't need.
Gotta love those old (and "old" looking) Smiths!
