How are the Sigma series automatics from Smith and Wesson? I'm looking to get my first pistol, and use this as a concealed carry. Particularly looking at the .40S&W, I can get a really good deal at my local gun store.

The 40 S&W cartridge is great . I've used it since it was introduced. The Sigma is not great and maybe that's why you can get a good deal. On the other hand the S&W M&P has been very well received ! I would go for that one. For other choices - Glock or the new Beretta, are good ones.

S&W was giving the Sigmas away free if you bought another of their guns a while back...tell you how the sales are on them. Spend a bit more and buy the M&P, you will be much happier in the long run.

Also price practice ammo...you'll find 9mm is a good bit cheaper and the 9mm in high quality defensive ammo will do everything the 40 S&W will do. (if you reload the cost is about the same)

personally, i would look at glocks and springfield armory XD's, but then i have had really bad luck with S&W autos a few times thru the yrs, the only ones i have had contact with i liked were performance center stuff, but i have heard they are better now than a few yrs back.

oddly enough a bud has a sigma .357SIG and its been pretty good FWIW. IIRC he paid like $275 or $300 for it LNIB, but while its reliable its not very accurate, good enough i suppose but nothing special for sure, but its "ok" i suppose for $300..

i'd still look at glock and SA.

I owned a 40cal Sigma and was very disappaointed in it. Seem to be cheaply made and the accuracy sucked.

M&P is a good choice, the Sigma is not.
Buy quality, cry only once.

With the M&P, I believe that S&W has beat Glock at their own game.
(And they aren't nearly as ugly.:D )

I will agree with everyone on this one the sigma is the bottom end of the S&W line, the M&P is their top auto.

I have had my M&P 9c for about a year now with about 1100 rds through it and it has been flawless.

If you are really going to use it for CC, I might suggest something a little smaller and these would be large guns to carry especially if your not used to carrying.

I was told by a S&W rep that the Sigma is their highest selling (ie; most sold) gun in the current line-up.

Lotta folks wanting a "decent" gun for not a lot of money.

But for those of us that want a BETTER gun for not much more money, get the M&P, XD or Glock.

Keep in mind, that the smaller you go in size, the harder the gun is to shoot well. If thisis your first handgun, get at least a midsize gun, like the M&P 4" barrel, Glock 19 or 4" XD. (the newer XD-M's grip is a bit long for CCW)

I agree that you should get a 9mm, due to costs.

.

I have one, and they are crap!

I was taken for $360 :grumpy: As a gun noob the sales man said this was the most bang for the buck. Blah blah blah... I went to shoot it, and it jammed up a lot and shot all over the place.

IMO it is to be avoided.

several years ago i bought a 9mm and put about 500 rounds through it without a problem. accuracy was good but took some practice to achieve due to the heavy trigger. I know a couple of other guys who have them and have had no problems. I believe that academy sports had them for under 300 with a rebate and 2 extra mags. really for the money not a bad gun. one thing to remember, much like a dodge truck used to be in the 70's if you buy one it's yours cause you won't get anything for it. good luck and let us know what you get.

I have 2 Sigma's, and for $300, it's a good 16 round.40. I'm happy with mine. Not a Glock, but not $500 either.

Trigger on the Sigmas is craptastic, I tried the one on my friend's and it measured out at 10 lbs.!

He ended up breaking the firing pin after dry-firing it for a couple of weeks.

Just spend $400 and get a Glock. Also, have you shot extensively in that caliber? A lot of people feel it 'flips' up more on recoil than either 9mm or .45 ACP. Something to think about.

My handle came from an experience with a Sigma, if that tells you anything. I now like most of S&W's other products, though.

ive always found the .40 recoil to be snappier than the .45 acp.

I had a sigma 9mm for a couple of years. I put A ton of rounds through it no problem. I finally traded it. The damn trigger is so heavy I wore out 3 trigger fingers.
