I'm going to go ahead and spend some extra $$$ on some diamond hones. Are the Smith hones as good as the DMT and EZELap. The Smith's are a little bit more economical. If anyone has had any experience with the Smith diamond hones, let me know what you think.

This is just my personal opinion. Years ago I used to have the highest regard for "Smiths" sharpening products. However here in the last few years I have been very disappointed with the quality of their products. And that's everything I've seen made by the company for the last few years. Their overall quality has declined miserably in my opinion.

I have 2 recommendations for you. First of all if money is indeed a critical factor in your decision making then I would definitely go with the DMT products. They make a pretty decent diamond stone for the money. Now if you are willing to wait a bit and get some cash together then I would recommend the Norton diamond benchstones. Norton stones have really made a believer out me. They do cost a bit more but they will last and perform much better over the long haul.

Also if you get a Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker they offer a pretty decent set of medium grit diamond stones you can buy extra for that kit. Good Luck and keep us posted. :) JD

I have the Smith hones and now I wish I would have gotten the DMT. They work, but from what I have seen so far, they will not last as long as the DMT.
