S&W knives are interesting in that some are junk, many are mediocre and a few are actually pretty good knives. I bought one of their Magnesium folders (made in Tiawan) and thought it was a pretty good knife, so when I found them selling for about six bucks, I picked up a few, only to find out the new ones (made in China) were garbage.

Then I picked up some of these Extreme Ops hawkbill folders and found they were excellent knives for the $10 each that I paid for them, and when they went to about $5 and I picked up more and this time I lucked out. Certainly the knives were not worth the $40-$50 retail price, but for five bucks they were a tremendous bargain. I sharpened up a plain edged one and found that it also managed to hold its sharpness very well. And the build of the knife also was impressive. The blade had no play in it and the lock-up was exceptional for a linerlock. I've since checked and found the price for these things vary wildly. They're no longer available for five bucks, but I wondered if anyone bought any while they were on sale at Smokey Mountain Knife Works.

Some people don't like hawkbills, but I do and I found these knives to be better than the vast majority of Gerbers now available. The serrated version also has impressed me in that the serration pattern was fine, but not brittle.

The serrated model has a good pattern.
