Got one of these a couple days ago. I assume they are 440C. At 5.5mm thick it seems good and stout. Anyone have one?

Haven't heard good things about S&W knives, so I have stayed away. I have to specific history with them though.

smith & wesson's are good knives; that is except for their "magic" assisted openers.

check out this series of youtube videos where a guy abuses a Smith & Wesson Search and Rescue...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2cCFx8i220
It breaks at the same point, in the same way as a "USMC" KaBar

and you are right; the blade is 440c steel

My USMC KaBar started getting chips in the blade after some basic batoning. Not impressed.

From China, it could be any 400 series steel. They usually stamp "440 Stainless" on it, which usually tends to be pretty soft and not hold an edge.

ok, well this one didn't....after some serious abuse, It broke where it went into the handle (if I remember correctly)

Taylor brands LLC. uses 440C steel for the Smith & Wesson knives.

Cool vid, it broke where the stick tang started but this knife is full-width tang so I guess it actually could stand being batonned in to a cinder block without much chipping. The tester said he had broken alot of more expensive knives much earlier on, he beat the snot out of it for about an hour. WIN.

They come duller than snot so I gave the lead edge a nice mall ninja treatment :D

No they're not lol

I don't know about their fixed blades, but I would anyone advise to stay away from their folders. I've tried three of them, all were very disappointing.
After the first one I should have known better...

I have a handful of there folders. Black Ops, Cuttin' Horse, and I think another model. Never have had any problems. The only ones I know to be crap (luckily not from experience) are there M&P "Magic" assisted openers.

you want knives to crap on, go over to ebay and buy some "super knife" brand folding knives (not utility knife).

And here is the further mod of guard removal, next up: a duraprene [rubber] handle.

Hmmm, I gotta move this to M,T, & E... Maybe I'll just start a new thread there when I'm done.
