noob here.

Is Smith & Wesson SWMB Micarta Boot knife really made from 440C? Thanks.

is it any good?

It's a boot knife, so basically any steel would be sufficent. S&W seems to like to use 7cr17MOV, which has been an ok budget steel. Tends to chip out easily, but it will hold an ok edge for a while. I prefer 8CR13MOV or AUS-8 in budget knives, though.

Just wondering why not? It's got a 1/4" blade. What's the reasoning behind it? Thanks.

Less than ideal blade profile, weird handle ergonomics, and semi-questionable steel. A mora would probably be better at most camp tasks. Ultimately, it's your money, though. Who knows, it might be ok for your uses.

The steel type is questionable but is not what makes it wrong for your application. It's not made for camping and would not be particularly useful for that use. It's made to be used as a last ditch weapon intended for stabbing 2 or four legged predators. There are many other affordable options, like the above mentioned Moras.

Again, I am a noob. What should a camping/outdoor knife be like?

If you're on a budget Mora's are a great option. They're great. I'd recommend a carbon steel robust but if you plan on doing carving with it then the thicker blade isn't the most ideal. The Mora companion is also a great choice, especially for carving. Can't go wrong with either. Do some research into Mora's. I'm sure you'll find something you'd like. If you're ok with spending a bit more but still keep it under $100 the Ka-Bar Becker line has many options that are tough and versatile

Also are all S&W knives made in china?

AFAIK, yes. And for the record, S&W has basically nothing to do with them. The knives are made by Taylor, who are licensed the stamp the S&W logo on the blades and sell them under that name. So don't think because S&W makes good guns, they also make good knives...they don't make knives at all.

Get a Wenger ranger. Mean ass saw, and nice blade length. Then you also have some decent quality knife with multi function and low cost.
