Hello all,

I recently purchased the Spyderco Sharpmaker, one of BF's favorite sharpening systems for $40.

I later saw what looked like a generic version of the same product, Smith's 3-in-1 knife sharpener. The guy at the store claimed it works just as well  for half the price.

How does its performance stack up with the Sharpmaker? If the difference isn't that much, i'd gladly trade it for $20 in my pocket; i'm fairly new to knives and not too keen on paying significantly more money for marginally better product.

The sharpmaker offers longer sharpening triangles, and different grits that this unit doesn't offer, I would stay with the sharpmaker.

I have had better luck with my 3-in-1 than I had with my Sharpmaker. The Sharpmaker has more grits, but I couldn't get a knife sharp at all with it.

roknjs, probably due to the angle, the sharpmaker does 40 and 30 I believe, must have had a knife at a different angle probably >40 degrees, always a good idea to take a lot of time on the grey mediums and hone on the whites.
