is this a good sharpening system for touch-ups and getting knives hair-shaving sharp? or would it be worth it to spend 30 more bucks to get a spyderco sharp maker?
I agree with "9blades" thoroughly on this. Now I would also go the extra 2 steps to make the Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker a complete system. I would get the 204 Sharpmaker kit and I would also get two of the ultra-fine stones and a pair of the diamond stones that both are made for the 204 Sharpmaker.
Also I can't stress enough that when you get the kit please study the booklet that comes with it and view the DVD/video at least 2 to 3 times before starting out. For your first knives to sharpen on the Sharpmaker I would do it with some older kitchen knives, or fixed blade or folder that is battle scarred before I would sharpen my premium blades. You definitely want to practice with it first.
The Sharpmaker is a way better system than the "Smith's" unit is IMO.
I have the smiths, and it's not bad. However, the fine isn't fine enough and the coarse is crap. If I had the chance to do it over, I'd get the sharp maker.
