Hello, I am relatively new to knives and stuff. I just ordered a really nice blade but truely have no clue about sharpening. I have heard that these types of sharpeners are good for getting out of a bind, but are bad for the blade in the long run. Is this any exception? I figured the rod it has may make a difference instead of just bringing it through a set universal angle. Thanks in advance!

This is a link to a pretty good thread posted by knifenut1013, including example photos of an edge 'sharpened' on the Smith's Pocket Pal, beginning with post #10:

As with any 'pull-through' type, it's the carbide scrapers in them that do the most damage to an edge. Other stages in them, like the ceramics, aren't quite so bad, but still very limited in how effective they'll be.
