Hello, I'm new to the forum.

I have a question about my Smiths Tri Hone system.

The "medium" grit stone actually feels smoother than the "fine" grit stone. Is this normal?

The medium grit stone is gray with some dark splotches, while the fine grit stone is pure white.

I just want to be sure they didn't mix up the stones hehe.

It has been a long time since I used an arkansas stone, so I am re-learning, trying to use their angle guide on a cheap knife.

Another thing I am noticing is that when I switch hands to do the other side, my right hand sharpening doesn't feel right. Any suggestions on how to get a consistent edge on both sides? I am using the plastic guide as I said above.

Also, any good links on how to get the whole length of the blade sharpened would be great too.

Thanks in advance...

Oh, and one other thing, can you sharpen a recurve on these? I have a kershaw clipper I just bought and am wondering how I will sharpen that...

Thanks again,
Scott

Ok, I just looked at a few pics of the smith's system, apparently the "medium" stone is light gray with dark splotches. So apparently my stones are correctly placed, but still I wonder why the white stone feels coarser?

It's a natural stone, its feel and the finish it produces don't always go hand-in-hand. You will likely need to use them a few times to break them in.

To do recurves the edge of a stone can be used but it must be rounded.

Why are you switching hands to sharpen? Have you always?
