Hello All,
Next week is the 36th annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival which is held on the Mall in DC. This is the first year that one theme was chosen for the entire festival:
The Silk Road: Connecting Cultures, Creating Trust
http://www.folklife.si.edu/CFCH/festival2002.htm
http://www.silkroadproject.org/smithsonian/index.html
http://www.ess.uci.edu/~oliver/silk.html
I was asked to demonstrate and talk about the various cutlery traditions that were along the Silk Road trade route and will have my own tent near the "Jewel Garden" section of the festival. Among other things we will display and speak about Japanese swords, Indian and Persian Wootz (crucible steel), Scandinavian pattern-welded blades, Chinese metallurgy and cutlery and the Indonesian Keris. The trade route spanned an immense region of the world and was active for more than 1500 years.
The festival runs from June 26 - 30 and again from July 3 - 7.
I feel very honored to have an opportunity to represent the American bladesmith in this 20 nation 350 craftsperson event. If you are in the area please think about attending ---- it's free.
