I will be in Tennessee (Gatlinburg area) in a few weeks on vacation and was wondering if Smokey Mountain Knife Works has a retail store. If so, is it worth dropping by?

Anything else I should see up there? (I'll have three kids with me)
Highlights of the National Park?

Thanks

yeah go its bigg, and there are a good many lil things for the kids to look at/do. and if you like cars i think there is a classic car museum about a mile from SMKW's.

They have more of a knife museum and the only problem is there's just too much and it's very hard to pick out what you want, if you aren't spending over a certain amount. Check it out and plan to stay awhile.
I like to go down to The Smokies and drive across the park to Cherokee North Carolina get on the Blue Ridge Parkway and stop and enjoy the views and hikes all along it's over 400 miles of well designed roadway. The Smokies are just too crowded in the summer and Blue Ridge Parkway is spread out for miles, limiting the mobs of people to just certain attractions. (you can always keep on driving, or move on)

They have a huge store on the outskirts of Sevierville heading out towards the interstate. Two floors, probably 50,000sf. And as tgiannies said hit the car museum especially if you like muscle cars and what knife guy doesnt. For the kids Pigeon Forge has all the usual mini golf and go kart rides and believe it or not Dollywood is a pretty nice amusement park. Make sure to visit Cades Cove about 15 miles south of Gatlinburg. It is a huge valley{cove} up in the mountains that is a restored community with an 11 mile loop drive that includes log cabins several churches and cemeteries and tons of wildlife. I have never been through there that I havent seen literally herds of deer and a bear or two. Sorry to ramble.

I vacationed there a few weeks ago and SMKW is not to be missed. Your family will even enjoy spending some time there and you will most likely not get bored for hours. It is pretty impressive.

A mile or two to the south toward Sevierville there are a couple of spots that offer helocopter scenic tours. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on that, but they have prices starting at $10 per person and it is a real blast for even a brief ride. Don't miss.

The muscle car museum is about 6 miles south of SMKW. I didn't see it myself. There is also a warbird museum at the airport in Sevierville. Just didn't have time to get to that, either, unfortunately.

In the Smoky Mountains park, stop at the visitor's center for advice. They also offer a shop, museum and movie. An easy but very enjoyable hike is to Laurel Falls. Doable with kids. It is smart to go to the park early in the morning and leave before lunch time or at least early afternoon. This way you will avoid traffic, crowds and heat. Bring bug spray and water. As stated above, the drive over into NC is very scenic.

There are a million things to do in Gatlinburg. Almost overwhelming. I didn't see the Ripley's aquarium, but is supposed to be very good and will fascinate the kids for sure. You can spend hours just walking around and finding interesting shops, etc. There is also a cable car ride or something up to a nearby mountain top. Kind of cool.

We enjoyed the area very much and will likely return.

Your wife will love it and the folks running it are just plain family to everyone.
Best of trips, Our favorite spot on God's green earth.

BTW: it is only twenty minutes from downtown Gatlingburg or 20 minutes from Pigeon Forge, about 35 from SMKW.

I live right here in Pigeon Forge, TN. The Smoky Mtn. Knifeworks is definitely worth checking out at least once in your life if you are in the area. Bass Pro Shop is just a few miles away off I-40. Everything is off exit 407 on I-40.

As far as finding other things to do----- this is a tourist town and there is no shortage of things to do and things to spend money on. Gatlinburg has a Hard Rock Cafe. The kids might enjoy taking the large tram up the mountain to Ober Gatlinburg which is a small-scale ski resort. Of course there is no snow but the indoor ice skating rink is open year round. You can always check out Dollywood for a nice little amusement park adventure.

In the Smoky Mountains there are several waterfalls that you can hike to. Some are easier to hike to than others. Cades Cove is an interesting place to drive through if you have never gone. It's generally a good place to view wildlife and you might get a glimpse of a native balck bear or two if you are lucky.

Send me a PM or email if you have any questions. I moved here from N.W. Florida a little over a year ago.

My wife and I just went to Gatlinburg a couple of months ago to do some hiking and get away. Here's a link to the thread with all the pictures.

Trust me - Go to SMKW it's the biggest knife store I've ever seen in my life. The prices are good also. They give a 10% military discount so use it if you can it'll offset the sales tax.

I bought two Case knives, a Buck Squire, and a bunch of other accessorie type things from that place.

It's three stories of knife bliss. The kitchen knife area isn't all that big, but they've got a ton of other knives. They've got stuff I've never seen before. I went there three times while we were on vacation.

At one point my wife went out to the car to go to sleep :)

The Graham Brothers are a couple of hours away from there also. You'll see a knife in that thread I linked to that I picked up from them while we were down there. My wife was really excited to go 2 hours to pick up a knife:) LOL

Have fun on your trip. There are two cool hiking stores in Gatlinburg. One is in a little market area with a bunch of other stores and there is another right before you enter into park as you leaving Gatlinburg.

Are you planning on doing any hiking and/or driving through the Smokies?
