The husband of one of Anne's closest friends, Stuart Grasberg just died from yellow jacket stings.

Mary said that he was stung while mowing the yard. He went over a yellow jacket's nest. They stung him. He came into the house and said that he felt "funny." He ate a popsicle and took a Benedril.

He had never had a problem when he was stung before, but this time his throat began to swell and he was having trouble breathing. Mary called 911, but they live in a very rural area and the EMTs had a hard time findiing them

Their 14 yo son, Ben, went down to the road to wave the EMTs in. Mary was on the phone and the doctors were telling her to give Stuart mouth-to-mouth. She said it was almost impossible to force air in and out of him. The EMTs finally arrived. Stuart's heart had just stopped, but they got it going again.

He was five days in the hospital before he died. A vital man with no health problems before this.

Mary is still in shock she has a hard time believing this is not just some kind of nightmare she will wake from. One day her husband is well and happy, then suddenly he is gone.

Smoke and prayers for Mary and Ben. and a little bit for Anne.

I'm so sorry to hear a tragic event like this. Prayers from Montana.
That is how allergies are- no real reaction, then the body has had enough without warning, and over reaction.

Damn Yellow jackets. I've never liked them.

So sorry for your friend, Bill.

Smoke sent...sorry to hear of such a senseless death.

Prayers sent Bill.

I'm so sorry.

It's not a bad idea for any of us to get a prescription for a couple of Epi Pens--they can often buy you enough time in situations like this one. (epinephrine is a broncho-dialator and vasoconstrictor: opens up your airways which are trying their best to swell shut, and shrinks your blood vessels which are trying to get as big as they can (think deadly low Blood pressure) during anaphalaxis).

Often you can get your PCP to do this if you say you are heading out on a trip and you or someone else has a History of allergic Rxn to bee stings.

Any docs or wilderness Paramedics/EMT's out there? I'm a Wilderness First Responder and EMT-B but I don't go on runs anymore and the knowledge starts to rapidly fade....

I am very sorry to hear this sad news. Charlotte is right up the road from me. Please accept my condolences. Prayers sent to all.

I had a doctor write prescriptions for EpiPens a few years back (both adult and child doses) in the event something like that happened to one of us. Thankfully, we've never had to use them (which means they have probably expired and need to be replaced).

Probably right. Check the liquid throught the little window and make sure it's clear and not cloudy. But if in doubt...get new ones.

I'm so sorry. Smoke for Mary and her son.

It happened to my son just Saturday. Stung about 10 times. Watched him carefully for a couple of hours. An hour after it happened there were still a hundred swarming around his shoes where he ran out of them.

Thanks all. I KNOW that smoke works. I felt it when you were praying for me and my knee recovery. (Fine now!)

This death was a tragic and sudden event. Seems so meaningless. This was not a huge swarm that stung him hundreds of times, just a few.

Mary said that the doctors kept giving her worse news every day. "If he comes out of this, he will have brain damage....." and finally, "Prepare for the worst, we have done all we can."

You can not really "prepare for the worst."

A huge unexpected hole in their family. You never know when death will strike. Really shows how fragile our lives are.

My sincere condolences to Mary and her son. This is a sad thing. My Prayers and best wishes go out to them.:(

Many years ago I survived a swarm attack by yellow jackets, and like Mary's husband, my throat also swelled shut. A HORDE of little kids. working in relays carried me a long distance uphill, but found a doctor. Thanks to all of them, I'm still capable of writing this. Prayers from Indiana. :(

What a trajedy. Prayers for his family.
