Today a massive earthquake hit the city of Christchurch, New Zealand. The quake measured 6.3 which is smaller than the one last year but this one was only 10Km from the city centre.

The news footage has been playing continuously here on Aussie TV and it looks grim indeed. The death toll has just been revised with 65 confirmed.

Kiwi's are tough bastards but they could use a helping hand.

Prayers sent.
Californians know about these things.

My thoughts and prayers go out to fellow kiwis back home...

Kia kaha

Cod - very impressive response from Australia - as much as we like to rib each other I was so pumped to see Australian emergency response teams mobilised almost immediately and Gillard offering every level of support possible. Good form.

Smoke and prayers coming in from the Bay Area, CA.

I heard on the radio a 'bout an hour ago that a search and rescue team from here in California is on their way to assist.

I'm a veteran of more than a few quakes, including the Northridge Quake in '94. That was a doozy - 6.7 magnitude, $20B damages, 8700 injured (1600 hospitalized,) approx 70 killed.

Centaur - yep I saw your boys are on the way also. Its good to have the loyal and unconditional support when this stuff goes down.

I grew up in Wellington, NZ and have experienced more earthquakes than I can remember but thankfully nothing serious.

Seeing the footage of average guys scrambling to move debris to free people who had already passed really hurt... sounds like you have been through similar situations. I struggle to imagine how tough it is for those folks back there.

Grim would be the way to describe it. The coverage is heartwrenching to say the least.

They just said that rescue efforts at the CTV building have been abandoned due to fire. No chance of survivors there.

Even if you are not directly effected by the disaster, it is times as these that, especially if you have a connection with New Zealand, you will be deeply affected....as I know we all are.

Prayers with everyone in Christchurch.

And a BIG thankyou to all the rescue teams from around the world who are helping the victims. Their bravery cannot be overstated.

I read today that they are amputating limbs to get people free of the wreakage. Bad can't begin to describe how things must be if that is the option they are forced to choose.

A colleague just went back to NZ to get married. Hell of a time it must be. Just awful.
