A few weeks ago my 5yr old got his first invitation to a non-family related birthday party. I guess when you're 5 and start making friends, bowling on a Saturday afternoon is a big deal.

Fast forward to today. The party had started and all the kids we were having a great time. Then all of a sudden there was a terrible thud sound and people gasping. The mom of the birthday boy fell from the carpeted upper level and split her head open. She apparently had a seizure and fell from the top step, down on to the tiled bowling area. The birthday boy and his older sister (7) were standing close to her when it happened. Nearby children were screaming and crying. Not to be too graphic, but the amount of blood loss was unbelievable. The siezure unfortunately continued for 30 or so seconds after she landed. Paramedics were called and they took her to the hospital.

I then found out that she had a brain tumor removed and had completed treatment within the last year. I really hope that the head trauma from today doesn't alter her in any way. I also feel terrible for the kids that witnessed it happen. Kids at that age have so many questions but seem to not be able to process many of the corresponding answers.

I especially feel bad for her two kids. The atmosphere of the party was non existent after the incident and rightfully so. I don't know that I've ever seen something as sad and felt as helpless as I did watching two children panic over a parent. Truly heart wrenching. I hope she makes a recovery.
