Just got a smooth finish NOE to match my crinke NOE. Question is how durable is the smooth? Does it wear more easily than the crinkle? Help! Thanks.

I really perfer the smooth - althought some of my crinkles have become smooth - none of my smooths have become
crinkles.........:D

The smooths were known to chip on occasion, the crinkle doesn't chip, but it does wear down. The desert tan is my favorite, very hard stuff to wear down as far as "paint" (I hate calling them that, is there a better general term) coatings go.

Thanks for the replies. I've actually had the crinkle on my HD (black) flake off at the tip when I have stabbed through a CD. Regarding the finishs, here is the pic of the NOEs I was talking about. The smooth finish is actually I believe the first generation that Busse used before the current crinkle finish rather than a crinkle that has smoothed. The top is the newer crinkle.

I just got back from camping (last weekend) and had the chance to beat the crap out of my SHSHII, which has the smooth finish. Handled it way better than the crinkle finish on my other Busses. The finish actually feels thicker than the crinkle finish. Don't know if that is actually true or not but it sure feels that way. There wasn't any chipping off of the smooth finish, such as the case is with the crinkle. I had alot of scuff marks, but the finish is still on the knife. Hope this helps. :D

Thanks, that is the reason I was wondering about the durability. My HD has lost about .5" of the finish on the tip since it actually flaked off, disappointing.

On my other Busses I have noticed that the desert camo is a VERY durable finish and seems to adhere more to the blade and is much tougher.

Final question, if the smooth finish is more durable, why the change to the crinkle?

I had the same thing happen to my HD. I was lightly chipping through some ice and the crinckle coating on the tip flaked right off.

I've wondered too what the reason for going to the crinkle-coat was...seems to me that the smooth would be more durable (I like the way it looks too).

I've beat the heck out of of my SJT and I"ve had no chipping and it has only slightly smoothed. I guess I have to go punish it some more!

SNAFU,

Nice pair you got there.

Smooth E-Models tough to find.

Thanks Andre, got really lucky on these. Just finding any NOE is getting tougher.
